As the ostentatious and nonsensical Regional Manager, Michael believes he is the office leader and entertainer, and friend. In actuality, he has no clue that most times he displays inappropriate behavior and comes off alternately offensive and pathetic.

Michael considers himself to be a comedian and is constantly torturing the office staff with his jokes, which are either uninspired ad-lib or routines from famous comedians that he repeats verbatim. Many of his jokes are offensive or insensitive to his office audience. Despite his lack of talent, he takes his comedy seriously. He keeps several joke books in his desk for reference, has a turbin so he can play Johnny Carson’s Carnac the Magnificent, and stages a full comedy show every year for “The Dundies” office party.

Michael’s unintentional insensitivity is a recurring theme, although this has been toned down in the second season. Michael is not racially hostile but often finds himself in the position of backpedaling after saying something that is racist, sexist, or offensive, but only after someone points out his mistake. This, combined with his penchant for comedy, gives Michael the ironic character flaw of being too juvenile to realize that he’s the most incompetent and unpopular person in the office.

Because of his denial about his popularity, he can sometimes be exceedingly insecure. He insists everyone in the office think of him as a friend first and a boss second. This results in a general spinelessness in dealing with the staff, with the exception of Dwight Schrute who is constantly sucking up to Michael. Despite this, Michael still sometimes panders to Dwight by giving him more responsibility than he deserves.

Has a “thing” with Jan and his Relator.

  2. Chloe says:

So much to say about Michael. Michael is the Reagonal Manager of the Scranton branch. He is a “friend” first and a boss second, and maybe an entertainer third. He is quite the idiot and usually says things wrong such as the infamous “inculcuble”. Micheal often tries to boost the moral of the office but is rarely sucessful. His best friend Todd Packer, who is a traveling salesman often visits or calls the office to talk him. Oh, and he is a big fan of Joe Rogan and his favorite song is For the longest time by William Joel.

  3. GOB Bluth says:

Michael loves the office, and know that the office loves him:

“If I had the choice between some cow I’d pick up at a bar or these people, I’d choose them every time. Cause with them it’s an everyday stand, and I still know their names in the morning.”

  4. Emily says:

Wrote a screen play called “Threat Level Midnight,” with the characters Michael Scarn and Catherine Zeta Jones.

  5. Becky says:

Was on a children’s variety show as a kid hosted by Miss Trudy who had an amazing body.

Drives a Chrysler Sebring convertible (silver with black soft top).

    Is a new home owner.

Never went to college (according to what he says in The Fire Drill).

  6. Sarah says:

Realizes that sometimes it’s important to just be “the boss of dancing”- as evidenced brilliantly on the booze cruise.

Has a penchant for coming up with interesting proverbs: “Blessed are those who sit and wait” and “The hand strikes…and gives a flower”

Seriously, though, I think at the end of the day all Michael wants is to be liked. He cares so much about the people he works with, but just has the worst way of proving it to them- usually sticking his foot in his mouth in the process. He really is like that kid in your elementary school class who wants to be friends with everyone, and convinces himself that he’s popular, but in reality no one will play with him at recess.

  27. Ashley says:

It’s harrd to used words to describe Michael. He can make you hate him, love him, or just feel plain bad for him all in one episode. I think deep down he is a good guy and he usually has good intentions but he just seems to get nervous and act stupid most of the time. But then at the same time I do think he is very self-centered. See it’s really hard to categorize him. : )

One of my fav scenes though is when they are on the booze cruise and Michael does his motivational dance!! It leaves you satisfied and smiling every time!

    “That’s what she said.” : )
