Scranton Insider on “The Carpet”

This is the first of what will be a weekly addition to Life In The Office. I present to you, Dave Caolo. You may recognize his name from The Unofficial Apple Weblog, but around this part of the office he is the “Scranton Insider.” Dunder Mifflin is based in Scranton, PA and Dave is a Scranton native. Each week, he’ll give us a few things you wouldn’t notice unless you are a Scrantonian.

So, at the risk of me being outblogged on my own blog, here is the Scranton Insider on “The Carpet”. Show him some love.

In tonight’s episode of The Office, Michael is displaced from his office for the day when he discovers…well, a poop on the carpet. A thorough cleaning by the custodian doesn’t take care of the smell, so Michael has the whole thing ripped up. But enough about the plot, let’s talk about all the great Scranton references that appeared in this week’s episode!

Pam explains that she spent her vacation in “The Poconos.” This is where every Scrantonian spends his/her vacation. It’s about thirty miles south of Scranton on Rte. 380. Most Scrantonians refer to the Poconos as “The Hideaway,” and always return complaining that it’s infested with vacationing New Yorkers.

While sharing close quarters with Michael, Dwight was trying to win a radio contest with the station Rock 107. This is a real station, and has existed for as long as I can remember. It’s in the same building as the Scranton Times newspaper, and the huge radio tower that’s on top of the building (which is strung with Christmas lights year round, by the way, although they’re only lit in December) is commonly referred to as “The Times Tower.”

When I was a kid, the morning show on Rock 107 featured a pair of DJ’s named Daniels and Webster. They were really pretty funny, and most of their humor poked fun at life in Scranton. Scrantonians have a peculiar way of speaking, and there are certain words that don’t appear outside the 18504 area code. The most notable is “Heyna.” It’s a bastardization of the phrase, “ain’t it,” and can be used to request your listener’s confirmation of any statement you make, simply by tagging it on to the end of a sentence. For example, “These hot dogs are good, heyna?” This means, “Do you agree that these hot dogs are good?” Daniels and Webster once recored a parody song called “The Heyna Family” to the tune of “The Aadams Family” that ripped on this practice pretty brutally. People wore T-shirts that said, “Heyna Proud.” It was amazingly funny (and sad). (You can hear the song here if you’re interested.)

Finally this week, there’s a flyer on the refrigerator in the staff break room for Abe’s Deli. Abe’s is a real place. It’s a kosher deli on Wyoming Avenue right in the middle of downtown, and it’s just fantastic. This appearance of the Abe’s flyer is kind of interesting, as it helps pinpoint just where in Scranton the Dunder Mifflin building is located. In the opening credits, we see a street sign that reads “Mulberry Street.” This is one of the main streets in town, and is only a block and a half away from Abe’s. Also, at the end of Mulberry Street is Mifflin Avenue. Coincidence? I don’t think so!

That’s all for this week. Check back here after the next episode, and I’ll have more “Scranton insider” information for you.

It’ll be fun, heyna?

As I’m reading the title to this post, I am realizing that it can read in a funny way. I hope no one reads the title only and wonders why we are calling the poop a “Scranton Insider”.

Dave, I’ll definitely look forward to more from the Scranton insider. I’m glad to see they’re using so many real names and places and things from Scranton, almost amazing really if they’re filming in CA. If you happen to figure out (or know intuitively), I’d be curious to know why they chose Scranton for the show. Was it already known as the “biggest little town” in PA or something, already? I think I’d like to visit it someday.

I’m such an office junky*! You’re supporting my habit!

    So, thanks.

*Is the Office a gateway drug to an addiction to PA? Oh I hope not… I live in Connecticut, Scranton’s already a little too close for comfort.

Thanks for the insider look at The Office. I think it’s definately one part of the fun of The Office to find references to Scranton. I live in Grand Rapids, Michigan and it looks like it might be a similar sized town as Scranton. I think part of the success of The Office is that they set it in a small to mid-sized town…the type of town a large portion of America lives in.

“Heyna” loosely translates as a Hindi/Punjabi word that means “don’t you agree.” It’s also tacked on to ends of sentences like you mentioned in the post. Amazing how how totally unrelated parts of the world (Scranton and India) could have a word that sounds the same and means practically the same thing (though probably different origins).

Sam: Seriously? That really is amazing. I had no idea. I assure you, the similarity of the version used in Scranton to the Hindi/Punjabi word is purely coincidental.

    A small word indeed.

Dave, I really enjoyed your post. I’m a Pennsylvania native and a big fan of “The Office” trivia.

In season 2 episode 9, we see Jim drinking a can of “Crystal” brand soda. Google tells me Crystal Soda Water Co. is a Scranton-based company. Are you at all familiar with it?

You’ll be glad to know that Daniels & Webster are still going strong on Rock 107 weekday mornings. Webster has recently entered the world of blogging:

    Kurt:

Crystal soda is indeed a Scranton-based company. In fact, the location of the bottling plant is also in the suspected neighborhood of Abe’s Deli and Mulberry Street.

Crystal makes several flavors of soda, including Birch Beer (which is a bit sharper in taste to root beer), Cherokee Red (the politically incorrect red soda with a huge, Indian face logo) and my all-time favorite, 50/50.

50/50 is a grapefruit/lime soda that is 12 kinds of wonderful. Whenever I visit Scranton, I buy a few 2 liter bottles to take home. Mmmm, now I want one.

In one episode, they showed Dwight’s business card. The zip code on the card was 18505. That puts Dunder Miflin in South Scranton, not in the downtown section.

In the scene where they stuff Dwight’s things in the vending machine, there is a Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons bobblehead of Mike Leiberthal.

Also, there is no Hooters in Scranton; nor is there a Chili’s, but there is one in Wilkes-Barre.

Then, I’ll catch up on the Season 2 episodes I’ve missed. Nice catch, thought. I can remember when The Barons’ stadium was first build on Montage Mountain. My dad and I went to the very first game.

    Hi All,

I’m an expat Scrantonian and I love “The Office” and all of the Scranton references. Whenever my mom comes to visit me, she brings me Birchola, You can’t get it anywhere else. They used to make a white birch, which was colorless and it was even better. She also brings me pizza from Pappa’s, a small family run business. They do a good business in locals and expats, their pizza is so good.

What Scranton references would people like to see in upcoming shows?

    Great blog, thanks!

Susan: Oh, man, I used to drink the white Birchola on my paper route (I delivered The Scranton Times when I was young). And, since I went to Bishop Hannan High School, we always went to Papa’s for pizza after basketball games, since it was just a block away (if you cut through the alley). Do they ship pizza? I’d kill for some.

As for future references, I’d like to see some restaurants mentioned, like Papa’s or Maroni’s on St. Ann’s Street or maybe Catalano’s on Main Street in West Side. Maybe they can go to Red Barons game or the Steamtown Mall! Keep your fingers crossed!

Dave, wow, I went to Bishop Hannan too. I loved the reference to a local high school (Jim’s ex-girlfriend went to Bishop ???? can’t remember which one, but it was a real school).

Don’t know if Pappa’s ships, I get it when I go up or when my mom comes to Virginia. A Red Baron’s game or Steamtown, that would be cool. My sister and I were thinking a tour of the coal mine would be cool as a team building thing, but it would have to be very well done in light of he WV tragedy and all the hardships that coal miners face. I took it and it was a great tour.

Thanks again for your wonderful blog! I told a lot of people about it.

I’d like to see references to any or all of the following:

    1) Granteed’s (since I used to deliver for them)

    2) “Up the Eynon” (since that’s where all the good stores are)

    3) Jersey Shore — the town in PA, not the shoreline

    4) 30,000 lbs of Bananas (the song supposedly inspired by a Rt 307 truck accident)

    5) Lake Scranton

    6) Anything UofS related

    7) Chicks Diner

    8) The Globe

    9) Scranton Muni (the golf course)

    10) Jimmy Connors (former mayor — not the tennis great)

Jim - UofS class of ‘93 (damn I’m getting old)

Great blog. I’m also an expat Scrantonion, now living in Connecticut and despite it being relatively close, it’s nothing like PA. Pretty neat that a major network TV show is set in our “small town”.

Every time I go back to Scranton I purchase some birch beer and jelly-filled krimpets. It’s only been over the past couple of years that Tastykakes have made there way to New England.

Just one small correction. I don’t know anyone from north east pa who vacations in the Poconos. If you live here…you don’t vacation here. People around here hit the Jersey shore or Maryland beaches for their vacations. I agree … a St Paddy’s Day episode would be great. Looking forward to a Dunder- Mifflin Float in the big parade.

    Dave,
    Love the Scranton Insider!

It really is amazing to note the authenticity of the references on the show considering they wouldn’t have to be that accurate to still work for everyone who views “The Office” and who doesn’t know anything about Scranton. I think it’s because the original British version, the city of Slough I believe was the setting and in the British version the setting was really a character unto itself.

Anyway, I’ll link you if you’ll link me! HA! Thanks again Dave,

At the end of the Christmas episode they headed to Poor Richard’s. That is a real bar located in the South Side Bowling Lanes. Also, I don’t think anybody ever joked about the charachter Ryan Howard’s name being the same as the baseball player. Ryan Howard played for the Red Barons a part of last year before being called up to the Phillies and being named NL Rookie of the year. He came back to Scranton a few times last year while playing for Philly to hang out with his Red Barons friends.

I’m from Scranton myself, and I don’t know anyone from here that ever vacationed in the Poconos either. And I don’t know anyone who calls it “The Hideaway” either. There is a “Hideaway” in the Pocono’s however: a gated community that does have a lot of former New Yorkers living there. And Ed’s got it right… Everyone from Scranton goes to the Jersey Shore (Wildwood/Cape May) for vacation.

Other Scranton references that haven’t been mentioned yet from recent episodes for those who are interested…

    1. Michael tries to give a gift certificate for Jilly’s to someone he just fired. Real place, real restaurant… on Court St I think in the Providence section of Scranton.

    2. Poor Richard’s has been mentioned several times.. It’s a real bar, located inside of South Side Bowling Lanes

    3. There is no Hooter’s even remotely close to Scranton to go for lunch at. Vestal, NY maybe? (an hour drive)

    4. Stroudsburg is almost an hour drive from Scranton and not a likely place to look for candied yams or pudding cups..
4.5. Carbondale isn’t close enough either, but a lot better than Stroudsburg.

    5. Rock107 usually requires you to be the 7th caller… not the 107th.

OK, I probably got some work to do somewhere around here.

Vacations in the Poconos…more like weekend getaway packages. And it’s not “The Hideaway”, it’s “The Hidout” you’re thinking of.

    Nitpicking over…

Here’s what we need on an episode, and probably it’s already been mentioned or suggested here somewhere since it is SUCH a natural…an “Office” episode centering around the world famous “Scranton St. Patrick’s Day Parade”. Dave, you have any connections at all to the show? Or know whose head to run that idea through? Anyone even vaguely familiar with things Scranton has likely heard of “Parade Day”. Love to see that episode!

Jim’s girlfriend went to Bishop O’Hara in Dunmore. Bishop O’Hara has been mentioned twice at least.
I really think the cast needs to come to Scranton to do some filming.
Anybody notice the Gertrude Hawk candy bars in the vending machine?
I’d like to see them mention the St Paddy’s Day Parade and the bars open for “breakfast” on parade day and The Race For The Saints in Jessup and any event at the arena in Wilkes-Barre.
Carbondale is really not that far if you take the Casey Highway and since Sugarman’s closed there really isn’t anything at the Eynon but a flea market.

From a proud Bishop O’Hara and U of S grad!

Hmmm… I live in Forest City, but work in Scranton. Carbondale is about 15-20 minutes if you take the Casey - something “management” could handle - working stiffs with a lunch break long enough to do that are definitely working at the right place. Actually, I think if you drive like me it could be done in 10 minutes.

I love D & W in the morning, so there definitely should be a mention of them - and “Vince said it would be like this” or maybe “Vince did NOT say it was going to be like this” - sorry, Vince.

They could lament the closing of Sugarmans - ‘cuz you definitely COULD get anything at Shugies.

As far as the business card having the wrong area code - let’s be honest here. We’ve had this new area code for how long and you would not believe how many companies signs, trucks, business cards, letterhead, etc. still have 717 on them so that’s not too far-fetched. Anything printed in bulk I guess…

I have lived in Jessup all of my life and would love to see an episode take place on St. Ubaldo Day (Race of the Saints). There are three statues that represent a particular saint. They are very heavy and need to be carried by a large group of runners. Each saint has a team with a certain color scheme. Michael lies about living in Jessup to participate in the race. He gets carried away by the excitement and almost gets trampled.

I’m a native of Wilkes-Barre. I’d have to say that the whole NEPA area uses such gems as “Heyna”. Another reference that hasn’t been mentioned was Lake Wallenpaupack in the Booze Cruise episode. How far is the lake from Scranton, and isn’t Harvey’s Lake closer?

I’d like Wilkes-Barre to be referenced in one of the shows. I know Scranton is in Lackawanna County, but I’ve always heard “The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton” area. Mentioned the Diamond City! :D

I am wondering if Dave is the Dave Caolo I know. If so, he will know the answer to this questions first asked at a local Scranton Hospital a million years ago. After visiting Nay Aug zoo during lunch, he returned with a “present” from Penny (or was it Toni?) the elephant. The questions is, “David, what’s that on your tie?” Let me know!

I’m not from Scranton. But everytime I am in the area I always stop for a Coney Island Texas Weiner (hotdog chili-like sandwich). Skiing at Montage has to happen too as well as a Barons game. I picked up on the Ryan Howard name-similarity as well.

Wilkes-Barre? Not many outside of NEPA have even heard of W-B. Although, for better or worse, most have heard of Scranton. Man, people from “down da line” have an inferiority complex compared to your Scrantonian neighbors. You have the airport named backwards (”Wilkes-Barre/Scranton” rather than the proper “Scranton/Wilkes-Barre” seeing that Scranton has twice the population of Wilkes-Barre). Anyways, Wilkes-Barre has been mentioned on the Office. Dwight has said that he lives on a beet farm “outside of Wilkes-Barre.”

    Dave,

Great job! Lot’s of fun reading here.

I don’t think anyone’s mentioned wishing for a reference to Orangeman Jerry MacNamara, Scranton’s favorite son. Everywhere outside of NEPA he is called the mayor of Scranton. He’s a guy we can all take pride in calling one of our own.

Pat, how can you fail to mention that the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton INTERNATIONAL Airport is not located in either city but is actually halfway between, in Avoca?

On another thread I mentioned that Scranton finally got a Starbucks. I believe that this, like so many other retail and restaurant chains, is actually locatd in Dickson City.

Too bad we’re losing the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons franchise (the Phillies’ minor league team based, confusingly enough, in Moosic.) A Dunder-Mifflin Day at the stadium (or an episode that involved a trip to the Dunder-Mifflin box!) would have been really cool. Maybe that can be done with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, Pittsburgh’s minor league hockey team. (They play in an arena located in Wilkes-Barre Township, which is just outside of the City of Wilkes-Barre!)

Harold, we’re not losing the Red Barons, just thier association with the Phillies. We’ll still have a Triple A team, it will just be the Triple A team of another major league franchise (probably Pittsburgh). I’m sure they will still be called the Red Barons, too.

No Kube…please no more Gerry MacNamara! That’s all we hear about in Scranton. Nothing against the kid…he seems like a good kid and he’s a good basketball player, but man, they really put him up on a pedestal. I would bet that even if someone from Scranton invented a cure for cancer, he’d still lose the headlines to MacNamara!

    Crystal Soda,

I don’t think this is located in Center city, nor the South side. I believe it is in Pine Brook, the part of Green Ridge closesst to Center City.

I must comment on everyone’s input and the writer’s information posted here. You’re all pretty good at guessing or assuming how everything happens on the show. I know for fact as I still live in Scranton and work directly with the show. To answer some questions, the pizza place was Brunetti’s Pizza, flower shop was some small place up on Prescott Avenue at the corners. The crystal soda was supplied from the Scranton warehouse (I know I picked it up for them)and they will not be featuring the parade this year. They weren’t aware of the magnitude and hopefully next year they’ll do a big parade episode. They are aware of Kegs n eggs and how crazy the town is and plan to do a little something this year but not the parade. St. Ubaldo was a suggestion, I love that myself with my grandmother living in Jessup I grew up with St. Ubaldo. I will forward that suggestion, probably next year as the shows are pretty such written for the rest of this season.

I’m surprised that no one has mentioned that there used to be a bar in Scranton named “The Office.” It was on the corner of Mulberry and Jefferson (I think, maybe it was Adams). It burned down sometime around 1995/6, while I was a student at da U. It was reputed to be a gay bar, although all I knew about it was that it was easy to get a beer there if you were under 21 (unfortunately, I didn’t find a boyfriend there).

I think they should have an episode where all the guys in the office go to the Pub Charles — they can be Pub Scouts –

Great blog! I see alot of speculation in posts on the location of the actual “office”. The show’s fictitious Dunder-Mifflin is based loosely on an actual Scranton business located at the corner of Adams and Mulberry called “The Paper Magic Group”, which specializes in creating paper-based seasonal products. I have read/heard several times that the producer had a greeting card or children’s valentine card that said “Made in Scranton” which inspired the idea of basing the show there. This card was doubtlessly made by Paper Magic Group, an enormous producer of such product.
The building at the corner of Mulberry and Adams was actually shown in the original starting credits of the first season but was removed, as I understand it, at the request of the company because they didn’t want to have an immediate association with the show for fear of bad press.
The Office film crew did extensive research at Paper Magic Group before the show ever kicked off. I’m sure any reference to the location of Dunder-Mifflin, like Dwayne’s business card address, is intentionally diverted from the real location of this very real business at their request.

Picking up on the Scranton refereences is one of my favorite things about the show. Being from a crap hole like Scranton it’s nice to see some recognition. By the way the Crystal soda is a great touch. And the Bishop O’Hara referrence was pretty damn funny. They gotta get some Clarks Summit props in there somewhere. After all there’s no way Michael actually lives in Scranton…

I’m from the Summit but go to school in Georgia and every time they are drinking Crystal Cream soda I wanna drive to PA and buy some. Maybe that or a 50/50…Cherokee Red is good too.

Other references that I’d like to see:

    -Glider Diner
    -Tink’s
    -Old Forge pizza
-Up Da Eynon (this one is a must)
    -Any use of “Coalminer” speak
-Saying “NEPA” and not north east PA

and isn’t the private community the “Hideout” not “Hideaway”?

They definitely need to go to a church picnic! That’s the whole highlight of the summer in Scranton.

    Crucial Church Picnic Elements:
    - BINGO and all of those instant bingo things
    - pizza fritas, pierogies, potato pancakes
    - “the beer tent”
    - “the bandshell” featuring performances by some local bands, ethnic groups, and little kid dancers.
    - Big Six, poker, etc.
    - white elephant
    - and, of course, a fight has to break out somewhere around 11:30.

    Hi Dave
My family in Scranton used to (probably still do) say “Heyna huh?” I never thought anyone else said it. Michele

Do you have that ROCK 107 tape? I remember listening to it when I was 11 years old. Do you know where I can get a copy of it?

    I loved “Sounds of Sugarman’s”

The building where “Dunder Mifflin” is set in is the Scranton Center which is located on the corner of Mulberry and Adams Ave. (This is the building that you see in the opening credits. This is just like the British version credits which show scenes of the town and building where the office is located!) The address is 401 Adams Ave. I and many ardent Office fans from Scranton believe that Dunder Mifflin closely resembles Paper Magic which is on the 4th floor of the Scranton Center. Take a ride up the elevator and see for yourself…I laughed all the way!

Hey there, I love this show! I think it is important for everyone to know Crystal Soda is located off Mulberry as well as the pine brook section. Yes there are 2 locations. Unfortunately I have heard rumors it will be closing soon. A friend of mine works there and is laid off every other week. They used to make 7 up but they lost that contract. Also it is the Hideout by Lake Ariel right? I went to Tech my first year of high school 1991, it was changed to Scranton High half way through the year. Just something I thought I would mention, cause it gets confusing to people sometimes, thought you could use that. And, as the saying goes “let’s go up da Eynon to get a cup of coffee”
Have fun with that, xo Suzy

Megatry, the chicken spedie is definately Binghamton’s concoction! However, it would be cool to get it mentioned. Going to Poor Richard’s today for lunch with a friend! Yay!

Is Dave Caolo still reporting on the scranton references? If so, where? If not, is someone else taking this on? I miss the weekely recaps of scranton references/trivia.

I couldn’t understand some parts of this article Scranton Insider on “The Carpet”, but I guess I just need to check some more resources regarding this, because it sounds interesting.
