“The Carpet”

Season 2 Episode 14

When someone soils the carpet in Michael’s ( Steve Carell) office, Michael begins to question his popularity with his staff. He temporarily takes Jim’s (John Krasinski) desk in the bullpen in order to bond with his troops - and initiates a sales contest to boost morale. Jim is forced to sit by chatterbox Kelly (Mindy Kaling), where he can’t make any eye contact with Pam (Jenna Fischer).

The part of the episode last night that really got me laughing was in the first 30 seconds when Ryan the temp shares, “Jim has been looking at me…kind of a lot this week. I would be creeped out by it, but it’s nothing the way Michael looks at me.”

Michael Staring

Another part that got me laughing was when Angela scared Dwight in their raid by giving him the hairy eye. He counters by only throwing her pen. That must have been a tough moment for Dwight. He was torn between supporting the man he worships and the woman he loves.

What was your gut busting moment?

Kelly seemed out of character in this episode — the talkativeness didn’t seem to match her personality in other episodes, which made it seem contrived. How about Jim asking out that girl over the phone? He’s definitely a smooth talker.

Hey, when Jim is listening to the voicemails from Pam… what is the weird ‘pig-latin-y’ message one or two from the end?Maybe she said ‘pseudo’ at the beginning.

We’re fairly new and have been catching up a bit thanks to iTunes, but maybe it’s something from a previous show?

    Any help?

PS- being from PA and with Scranton family, I enjoyed the ‘insider’ info post on ‘The Carpet’… I like those little real touches. (Oh, now my message seems like that fine post on Scranton is a pile of something on the carpet… oh dang, and I said I like ‘real touches’ that can’t be a good thing to say on the interweb…. ;-)

    cheers,
    Ken & LIsa

Richard, I agree with you on Kelly. That seemed a little out of character to have her talk so much.

Ken, I listened to that message again and I have no idea what that is. Hopefully someone can help.

When Creed comes in and says “Someone making soup?”, I lost it. Excellent episode last night.

When Michael first announced the sales contest, he was about to display the cash on the wall, but quickly glanced at the (black) carpet worker, took it back out and clipped it to the monitor on his desk instead. I laughed out loud.

Agree wholeheartedly about Kelly. She never seemed before to be the type of girl you’d want to, well, stuff a sock in.

It was also pretty depressing when Michael feared someone (or everyone) in the office was behind the “smelly thing” by his desk. The poor guy, it was as though he was betrayed by his only friend(s)…which might be true except for you can’t really say the employees ARE his friends. Poor Michael.

Lastly, and I’m sorry but I have to say this, this thing between Pam and Jim has got to stop, because I’m begining to not like Pam all that much. Jim, for that matter. Jim, in past episodes, has done everything but say I love you to Pam, so she knows (The Client episode…suggesting they had a date). Pam shouldn’t string Jim along any more. She should sever the “friendship” ties. That would, in effect, force Jim’s hand. Either they need to convey their true feelings to each other or the wedding needs to be moved up a few months.

Jeff, it turned out to be the obnoxious Todd Packer. He was the one who sent Michael the “package.” Once Michael found out that it was Todd, he thought the prank was hilarious.

Hey Ken and Brian, I think that Pam’s message was saying something about Sudoku, which is this complicated Japanese puzzle where you have to put numbers 1 through 9 in these squares– anyway its hard to explain but I think that’s what she was talking about. Maybe she said something about she did the puzzle in 18 minutes and timed it with the bottle timer that Jim put in the teapot for Christmas? I can’t be sure though. (Sudoku by the way is really popular right now and it is in the little puzzle sections in most newspapers.)

Thanks Becky… it sounded like such jibberish, I thought it must be an extra cool ref or something. That would make sense- another bored Pam activity report.

Loved how they turn the corner from the Michael jerk humor to the sweet stuff… and notice what *wasn’t* on his voicemail… a message from somone else??

    cheers

    I think it she says…

    Soduko.
    Level Moderate.
    18 minutes.
    Suck on that Halpert.

(At least what I could figure from the iTunes episode that I could go over and over)

Chris is correct in his analysis of “level moderate”, kind of jumbled / mumbled but that’s what she said. For those curious about the other voice messages here they are :-)

1 - Hey Jim it’s Pam, I keep looking up to say something to you and then Michael’s there, it’s horrible. Anyway, I’m bored, come back.

2 - Hey guess what, I moved my computer so I can’t see Michael’s head. It’s working, I think I could have a career as a very specific type of decorator.

3 - Suduko: level moderate, 18 minutes. Suck on that, Halpert.

4 - I’ll transfer you. Dunder Mifflin this is Pam, hold please. Dunder Mifflin this is… okay sorry Michael was standing at my desk and I needed to be busy or who knows what would have happened, so thank you.

5 - Hey what’s that word we made up for when you have a thing stuck in your shoe? Anyway, I have a thing stuck in my shoe.

6 - Hey, I have a chance to sneak out of here early and I’m not messing this up so I’ll seeya tomorrow.

7 - Calling from my cell phone, I don’t know if you guys figured out who did that to Michael’s carpet yet, but I have a theory that involves an interdepartmental conspiracy, everybody in the office. We need to talk.

I think the star of “The Carpet” was Michael’s mullet. Do you have a screen cap of it?
