TheNewsTribune.com has an interesting article talking about the popularity of The Office. It talks about the way The Office started out slow but has becaome “the linchpin for a new kind of NBC must-see comedy night that has been attracting a young audience.”
It goes on with, “In the last episode before the Winter Olympic Games usurped the NBC schedule, “The Office” was a solid Top-30 show, attracting 9.2 million viewers – up 69 percent from the season’s start. And that’s on traditional TVs. “The Office” has become a bigger hit in new media, becoming a leader in downloaded episodes at $1.99 a pop on iTunes.” (I like to think our little community has something to do with that.)
Producer Ben Silverman says the iPod success “brought us an audience that wasn’t tuning in to traditional broadcast television.” At the same time, he says, making the episodes available for download immediately after they are broadcast makes the show an event that drives up ratings. “That created a new audience for us who probably wasn’t watching the television show the way they normally do,” Silverman says. “And now they’re coming to the show.” (The rest of the article here.)
This is a great sign for The Office, and for other networks making shows available on iTunes. It hits such a strong and loyal group of people that really helps the popularity of the show.
