Scranton Insider on “Michael’s Birthday”
As always, Dave gives us the view as a Scranton Insider:
This week the folks at the office celebrated (kind of) Michael’s birthday. It was a good episode, but believe it or not, I found a mistake! More on that later.
In an attempt to “get the party started,” Michael had Dwight get subs for the group from the Niko-Bella deli. As you may have guessed, this is a real deli right in town. However, this brings us to this week’s error.
Michael calls the sandwiches “subs.” Subs?!? In Scranton, they’re “hoagies.” I guess I can let this minor error go.
Pam and Jim go shopping for gifts for Kevin at a Rite Aid. Rite Aid is a drug store chain that is all over Scranton. Its inclusion in the show is very appropriate, as Rite Aid was in fact founded in Scranton. The very first store came to be in 1968.
Of course, the best part of this week’s episode (from a Scranton Insider’s point of view, at least) was the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins jersey Michael received from Dwight. The Penguins are a professional hockey team representing both Scranton and neighboring Wilkes-Barre, and that was a real Penguins jersey Michael held up. Very cool.
A good episode this week. I’ll talk to you next week, dear readers!

Agreed….the SWB Penguins jersey was the best part of the episode. With baseball season kicking off, I hope to hear about Red Baron’s baseball, concerts on Montage Mountain, or even a breif snippet about Breaking Benjamin (local band).

Someone said there was a name on the ice rink when they went in, it is a rink in California. That was the BIG mistake in the show. The rink they would be at in Scranton is the Ice Box, come on everyone in NE PA knows that.

Lynn: You’re absolutely correct. The sign in the show said “Picwick Gardens,” and it was in several shots, very legible. Tsk, tsk.

Cheers for the first Wilkes-Barre reference!

Hey Dave,
On vacation this week. Finally got off my butt and went out and shot some video, jammed it into my computer, tried my hand for the first time at video editing (it shows), threw “The Office” theme on it and VOILA! 34 seconds of stuff you don’t see in the opening credits. Well, about 30. I started out with the Penn Paper tower, the Welcome to Scranton sign, a street shot, then some of the places that have had a mention on the show.
Didn’t get to Lake Wallenpaupack and forgot about Bishop O’Hara HS…also had a shot of the Mifflin St. sign and FORGOT to incoude it! Oh well, I’m new at this. Hope you’ll forgive me! Anyway, check it out on my blog… webster107.blogspot.com … or go to the link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wjy3ueOtGls.
Hope you like it!

I live in Scranton as well and the Electric City Sign is on top of the “Electric Building” which houses many departments from the Courhouse

I had to make a run to Scranton after work yesterday. It was a rainy & very windy day. After I got off the highway to take the Central Scranton Exit I noticed that the winds had taken down the “Scranton Welcomes You” sign. It’s the same sign seen in the shows opening.

Are they replacing the welcome sign on the Central Expressway maybe? They’ve already replaced the one at the bottom of the North Expwy with a new design (with a picture of the Electric City Sign on it).
