Scranton Insider on “Drug Testing”
As always, Dave gives us the view as a Scranton Insider:
Hello, dear readers. Before I begin this week, I just want to let you all know that no, I have never pooped a balloon. There, I said it.
The office was rocked this week by Dwight’s discovery of half a joint in the parking lot. As a “Lackawanna County” volunteer Sherif’s deputy (Scranton is in Lackawanna County), Dwight upholds his sworn duty to identify the group’s resident druggie.
Later, Kelly mentions that she had eaten nothing but a pretzel from “…Auntie Ann’s in the food court” prior to attending a party. She’s undoubtedly talking about the pretzel chain Auntie Ann’s in the Steamtown Mall. This is the Steamtown Mall’s 2nd mention this season, the first being from the episode “Take your daughter to work day” (Stanley’s daughter mentioned Jitterz, a coffee in the mall).
Michael mentions that he smoked a “clove cigarette” during an Alicia Keyes concert at the Montage Mountain Performing Arts Center. This was by far the best reference this week. Montage Mountain is a ski resort (if “resort” is the right word) that can be clearly seen from Scranton. In fact, when I lived in west Scranton I could see a haze in the lights above the slopes whenever they were making snow. In the summer, the hold concerts there, and it’s a lot of fun. I can remember when I was in college, I went to see a Lollapalooza show there. On the following night, the mountain would play host to a Michael Bolton concert. The Scranton Times (newspaper) ran a story about officials at the mountain who were worried about damage that the hippie Lollapalooza crowd would inflict upon the property. Can you guess where this is going? The Bolton crowd far outdid the alternative kids.
I didn’t recognize the building Dwight walked into towards the show’s end, but as far as I know they cast hasn’t yet filmed in Scranton. Maybe someday…
That’s it for this week. Thanks for reading, folks!

Hey Dave,
Excellent episode. “It HAS to be URINE!” Laugh?!? The building Dwight walked into, you’re right, not Scranton. To “turn in his badge” he’d be walking into the County Courthouse, the main entrance of which is as you know on Adams Avenue.
Anyway, loved the show, love Scranton Insider! Have a dandy weekend from everyone at Dwight’s favorite radio station, Rock107.

Duh, the back entrance is on Adams, the main entrance on Washington.
See what happens when you drink lunch?

I discovered an error in this episode. Dwight is a volunteer sheriffs deputy for Lackawanna County, but if I remember correctly, Dwight lives on a beet farm near Wilkes-Barre. Wilkes-Barre is in Luzerne County, and nowhere in Lackawanna County would be considered “near Wilkes-Barre.” Dwight, therefore, should be a volunteer sheriffs deputy in Luzerne County. Maybe I have too much time on my hands to be contemplating such things?
Actually, there are no VOLUNTEER sheriffs deputies anywhere in Pennsylvania. They’re all paid.

This has nothing to do with this particular episode but I was at a Scranton- Wilkes-Barre Red Barons game recently and the in between innings Sumo Wrestling activity is now sponsored by Dunder Mifflin. Is this an indication of a future plot line?

The ‘courthouse’ Dwight walked into to turn in his badge appeared to have palm trees to the left of the door. (They had been de-fronded, but they looked like palm trees nonetheless.)
Not really related, but amusing: Mira and Paul Sorvino, Martin Sheen, Robert Mitchum and Bruce Dern are all honourary Lackawanna County sheriff’s deputies:

Could be a Viewmont Mall reference rather than Steamtown - Auntie Anne’s isn’t in the food court at Steamtown anymore (they’re at the Boscov’s end of the mall), but it is in/near the food court at Viewmont.

I just can’t wait for a mention of the Archbald Pothole! I really do think I will wet myself!

The pothole would be cool….just went back to PA for the Lackawanna River Corridor’s Riverfest….came in just about dead last…how about having Dunder Mifflin sponsor a float in the regatta…perhaps a giant floating ream of paper with the gang on top.
Just a thought…

The Archbald Pothole. For those who don’t know its a small state park about 15 minutes north of Scranton in the town of Archbald that is basically a “glacial pothole”—i.e.-a natural, huge hole in the ground. Its been notorious over the years as a hangout for gay men looking for some “action.” It would be funny for Jim to have been driving down Route 6 and see Dwight’s car pulling out of the “Pothole.”
