A Little More On Kevin’s Band

Image

When Pam is looking thru tapes to hire a band for her wedding, she and Jim pop in a tape from a band called “Scrantonicity”. The band sounds pretty good, but the interest is heightened when they see that it is Kevin singing and playing the drums.

That little scene has gotten that song stuck in my head for the last few days. I was singing it and my friend said, “Is that the song from The Office?” and wondered if it was a real song or if I just watch the show two often. I replied, “Both”.

In case you missed it, here is an interesting tidbit. Scrantonicity was playing, “Don’t Stand So Close To Me” by The Police. Perhaps the song title was foreshadowing what would happen later in the show.

What makes it even more interesting is that The Police released an album in 1983 called “Synchronicity.” So, Jim was right on when he said responded the the video special effects by saying, “Yeah, you haven’t seen that since 1983.” (pictured above)

Thanks to Tyler T for reminding me about this interesting tidbit. If anyone else has an interesting tidbit about any episode, don’t hesitate to send it in to me and I’ll share the knowledge with all the readers.

    “The band sounds really good…”

Really? As far as music goes, they sucked. Unless that’s sarcasm I didn’t pick up on.

But still, interesting tidbit. And so much for Kevin being in a Steve Miller coverband. Brian had been hinting in his blog that they would be changing their format but…wow. The Police? How ambitious of them.

I LOVED how “Scrantonicity” was used in this episode. First of all, it is THE perfect name for a Police cover band in Scranton (do they only cover Police songs?).

Of course the music wasn’t that great - if it were, Kevin wouldn’t be working at Dunder-Mifflin.

I thought it was great how Jim was helping Pam go through the band tapes, considering ROY is in charge of picking a band for the wedding.

Also, no one should feel old for knowing “Don’t Stand So Close To Me” - it’s a classic!

I will agree with you that their cover of “Don’t Stand So Close To Me” isn’t all that great, but I don’t agree with the statement I quoted above.

I know several incredibly talented people in bands that still have to work day jobs in order to make ends meet. Musical talent does not equal financial success. Some of the most gifted people in music barely make enough to pay their bills or pay for a place to stay from one tour-stop to the next. Sorry, I know you probably weren’t meaning to start a debate about the music industry when you said that, but it kinda bothered me. That’s all. No hard feelings.

    P.S. No, I’m not in a band.

After reading that entry, I can only think of something along the lines of…

“You mean Sting used to be in a band and played reggae-based rock music in the 1980’s?”

I am still wondering if there were any legal issues concerning Kevin’s band originally being a Steve Miller Band cover band. Since it was never “officially” announced and only mentioned on the Season One DVD extra, it seems the price was too high for Stev Miller tunes or the were asked not to do it altogether maybe b/c Steve and his “people” just didn’t get or appreciate they way in which they were being represented. Though I can’t imagine Sting and his “people” being any more cooperative, unless of course Sting digs the show OR whoever owns the rights might be connected to GE which owns NBC so things are cheaper or sometimes totally free (The Simpsons would use the Batman theme a lot b/c Fox owned it so it was free for them) My final theory would be simply they couldn’t find a good name to call the Steve Miller cover band and maybe some one was like “Scrantonicity!, well maybe if we change it to a Police cover band”, the some one else says “Fine let’s do it” Any other thoughts or theories.

To catch up those who were not familiar w/the song: it’s about an illicit teacher/student relationship. I thought it was a clever foreshadowing of P & J’s ‘impossible’ love. I love me some Steve Carrell! What a great writer! (and actor, of course) Loved him since “The Daily Show”.
