“Office Olympics”
Season 2 Episode 3
With Michael out finalizing his condo purchase, Jim sets up the office olympic games with the staff.
This episode was fun because it showed the crazy relationship between Michael and Dwight.

It also shows the strange relationship of Jim and Pam. Pam continually praises Jim for his creativity and fun personality. And, we see another of the games that they play with each other. Every so often, Jim will die of boredom and it will be up to pam to revive him.

And of course we were introduced to the fun made up games of the Office Olympics.

Wasn’t is great when Michael started to cry during the closing ceremonies? what was that? Did you have a favorite part?

So far I’ve counted 2 times that Michael cries…Olympics and The Secret (when Jim confronts him about telling his secret).
Pam has cried once (Boys and Girls).
Angela has cried once (Christmas Party).
Anyone else???

Meredith cried at her birthday party, but I don’t remember what episode that was in.
Jim cried in the season finale when he tells Pam he is in love with her.
Pam was crying when Roy set a date during booze cruise. So that makes twice.
Thats all I can think of…

I think Angela cries…doesn’t it have to do with the party planning committee?

In this episode we also get introduced to two new characters, Bill of the Condo Association, and Carol who is Michael’s Realtor. Dwight also notices that the walls are thin (”These babies are thin!) in the main bedroom when he can hear cello practice going on the other side of the shared wall of the condo unit. Bill also assures Michael and Dwight that the neighborhood is “very accepting of all lifestyles”.

I think Angela cried at the Christmas party after she saw Kelly kiss Dwight–she was smashing ornaments outside.
I just love the closing ceremonies–especially “those are the doves.”

Here is my short list of the games listed in this episode:
1. HATEBALL football game played by Oscar and Kevin; also played by Jim who calls it “paper triangle flicking and hitting things game.
2. Kevin plays Who Can Put the Most M & M’s in their Mouth”
3. Toby originated “Dunderball”
4. Stanley’s game is “Work Hard so My Kids can Go To College”
5. The national sport of Icelandic paper companies is “Flonkerton” (in English “Box of Paper Snowshoe Racing”) Phyllis vs. Kevin in this race and Phyllis wins. Pam gives the name “Flonkerton” to this event.

Angela plays a game which is called “Pam Pong” in which Angela counts how many times Jim gets up from his desk and goes to reception to talk to Pam.

Is Roy crying when he sets the wedding date? He’s pretty choked up.
Good call on Angela’s game, Mindy. It’s a fun side of her they don’t really explore much. She’s much more passive aggressive usually. That wasn’t real passive.
When those doves started flying, I laughed so hard. Michael is so accepting of the situation because of his his need to believe he’s beloved and admired. He barely questions the bizarre nature of the standing on boxes and playing the national anthem with paper doves flying by. Pure genius by the writers.

Pam also cries in The Pilot when Michael “punks” her and tells her she’s fired.
Someone pointed out on the televisionwithoutpity forums that one of the reasons Michael is so accepting of the “closing ceremonies” is because he just “closed” on his condo. I totally did not make that connection until someone pointed it out.

i always liked to believe that he was crying because he had just won a golden globe and he realized they were all cheering him on for that

I love when Kevin is talking about the candle that they are using for their flame of competition, and he says it smells like cookies. And Jim says something like “Yes, yes it does my friend.” And that’s the same candle Kevin comes out of the stall with when Jim puts Dwight’s desk in the bathroom. ew.

Yes, Michael is crying because he thinks the “closing ceremonies” are because he closed his house (that’s the only way Jim could get away with it during work - Michael doesn’t get what it is).
And sinse Michael just made a really big change in his life, which he is very, very unsire of, he starts crying. Also, he thinks they’re cheering for him, not making fun of him.

The one thing that totally bugs me about this episode is the through wonky editing Jim lights the Olympic flame twice.
