I Can Travel Anywhere, Except Cuba

Sunday, August 13, 2006

This post has a double purpose. First, it is to make you aware of the great list of quotes from The Office that is found on Wikipedia. You can find a lot of entertainment and laughs on that page. You can find that list here

Also, one of the quotes that I read was when Jim asked where Dwight would travel. He quickly responded:

I can travel anywhere, except Cuba, and I will travel to New Zealand and walk the Lord of the Rings trail to Mordor and I will hike Mount Doom.

Any creative guesses on why he is not allowed to travel to Cuba? I bet it has something to do with the beet farm. Maybe he broke the US partial embargo of trade with Cuba by shipping beets there.

Dwight is not allowed to travel to Cuba becasue it is illegal for U.S. residents to travel there.

From Wikipedia: “The restrictions on U.S. citizens traveling to Cuba lapsed on March 19, 1979; the regulation was renewable every six months, but President Jimmy Carter did not renew it and the regulation on spending U.S. dollars in Cuba was lifted shortly afterwards. President Ronald Reagan reinstated the trade embargo on April 19, 1982… The current regulation does not limit travel of US Citizens to Cuba per se, but it makes it illegal for US Citizens to have transactions (spend money or receive gifts) in Cuba under most circumstances without a US government Office of Foreign Assets Control issued license.”

    Hope this clears it up!

Dwight could probably go to Cuba if he went somewhere else first and flew, for example, to Mexico and then on to Cuba. But he can’t go directly to Cuba from anywhere in the US!

Daniel, it’s not illegal to travel there, it is illegal to have transactions there without a license.

He can’t go there directly, and knowing how he carefully follows laws, being an (ex-) sherrif’s deputy, he won’t go there at all.

Unless Castro dies and everything changes.

Wikiquote is different from Wikipedia! Haha it’s not a big deal, but just so you know they are different. They’re both run by the Wikimedia Foundation. Wikipedia has a fantastic article on The Office by the way, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Office_%28US_TV_series%29
