“Diwali”
Season 3 Episode 6
In an effort to learn more about Hindus (and for a good excuse to pary) Michael encourages all of the staff to atten a Diwali.
Michael really enjoyed the party, but not really the food.
Michael invited Carole to come along. They were having a good time, and it seems like Carole really likes Michael…but not enough to marry him. Michael was in the moment and proposed to Carole in front of the whole crowd. It didn’t go over well, and Carole left angry.
Kelly’s parents (who are Mindy’s parents in real life) don’t like Ryan very much. They are encouraging Kelly to marry a doctor instead. Ryan seems to want this as well.
Pam seemed to really enjoy herself at the Diwali. She just has a good attitude about things. Studly Roy shows up during the party, but it was too hard for him to see Pam dancing and enjoying herself. (How many male LITO readers have been there? Amen brother.)
Pam also tried to reach out to Jim in some text messaging, but he was up in Stamford taking shots and was too out of it to respond. This bummed Pam out.
Andy was the ones to provide the shots and he took full advantage of them. He was laying on the floor and busted out in song.
Karen may have been the smartest of all. She avoided the shots and got drunken Jim just where she wanted him. He wasn’t able to ride his bike home so she offered a ride.
The episode was good. I enjoyed it more than I was expecting. I loved Jim’s fall, Andy’s singing and Michael’s dancing. But I didn’t appreciate that the show had no ending. I mean, it’s always too short, but what was up with the ending? Rather than progress the plot, they jumped back in time and showed Michael songing the song. Not fun. At least we have some longer episodes coming up.

Question about Dwight and Angela:
When Pam was asked if she was going to go to the party adn she tried to say no because she didn’t have anyone to go with and Kelly suggested Dwight….Dwight said something to the effect of “Yep, 100% single!!”. The camera cut to Angela and I thought they were just covering their relationship as usual. However, at the party when Dwight arrived, he didn’t really even go near Angela…it made me wonder if those two have broken up and we just haven’t been made aware of it yet.
Who Knows???

I thought Dwangela was just trying to cover up their relationship, as usual. I can’t see that as lasting long.
Oh, and it definately didn’t resolve, in my mind. I don’t know, it bugged me that we didn’t get more out of the Pam/texting situation or the Karen/Jim driving off together. (How cute wsa Jim falling off the bike?) But I really like The Diwali Song!

I liked this episode; not the best of the season (which was Grief Counseling, in my opinion), but good.
Good things: Creed’s comment (Union of the Monkey I think?), Ryan=Zack Braff, Ryan happily discussing plans on buying an XBox and traveling, Kelly’s dad=”How long have you been married to the cheerleader?”, Pam loosening up, Andy and Jim singing, Jim falling off his bike (into Karen’s arms? :O)
Bad things: NO ENDING!! Dwangela problems? Dwight was a jerk. Michael’s constant disappoints (don’t you feel so bad for him?), the Pam/Michael kiss (I get the humor but I just thought it was too much), Jim missing Pam’s text (grr!), and that tricky little Karen faking taking shots.

Brian,
I totally agree with you on that one. I think EVERY episode is WAY too short. When they end I feel like it’s just starting! They always end with that black screen and I stare at the screen in disbelief that it’s over. Especially this week, there was no resolution at all.
In my opinion The Office should be an hour long. It sounds like the editors of The Office are cutting so much of the footage every week anyway. Often I hear people say, “comedys are always a half hour. Shows like ER - DRAMAS are an hour long.” Well, The Office may be a comedy, but it’s at least half comedy and half drama. I really don’t understand TV stations and their choice of programming.
Hey NBC! Extend The Office to an hour-long show every week and get rid of crap like Deal or no deal!
Other than that…great episode. There were some deliciously awkward Michael Scott moments in that one.

Agree–an hour would be way better for the Office…more to watch and less to see on the outtakes…keep them in and extend the show for an hour!
Please help if anyone has TIVOed the show…what was the Indian guy saying to Pam before she texted Jim? I couldn’t get all of the audio on that conversation. Mindy

I think the Temp was the underrated star of this episode. He didn’t have many lines, but his telling Kelly’s parents that he wanted an XBox was amazing. He always smiles when he says something hilarious like that.
Watching Michael with Carol and then Pam was incredibly painful. The moments before the rejection are always the worst with him, because you just can’t believe what a dummy he is, and you the anticipation of extreme awkwardness is unbearable.

Very good episode on balance. I really thought that the Michael/Pam “rejected kiss” was lame, however.
November 3rd, 2006 06:17
What did Pam mean when she said something like “I thought something would happen tonight”? Did anyone catch that? Neither hubby or I could figure out what she meant.
November 3rd, 2006 06:19
OK, so the first time I watched last night, when Andy and Jim are passed out, then sing, I was just bummed that he missed his text message… then today, on rewatching I realize… Andy and Jim are singing FREAKING INDIGO GIRLS!!!! How cool is that? As a male that grew up in the 80’s, I had to admit, I knew those words too! Kelly’s writing is on the same level as B.J.’s.
Creed’s one liner steals the show again.
Kevin: “This is the best meeting ever”.
Join the Army.

Mindy, I just listened to it 9 times and I couldn’t understand what the Indian guy said to her.
Kim, my guess was that she was hoping to text Jim an invitation to come down to the party. Now that she knew he wasn’t too far away. If Jim wasn’t drunk and working, I think he would have come and had a good time.
November 3rd, 2006 06:24
the indian guy said something to the effect of “he sure is outgoing…” refering to Michael. Pam had just remarked how surprised she was that her boss had proposed in public. (since she would never have the cajones to do that)
November 3rd, 2006 06:31
John N, you’re right
Pam ” Can you believe my boss proposed to his girlfriend in public? That’s so Michael.”
Indian Guy: ” Is it? He’s really outgoing huh?”
November 3rd, 2006 06:39
Many thoughts about this one.
I think Pam was just texting Jim to tell him about Michael’s proposal, not to invite him to come. It was newsworthy.
And I don’t think Karen was faking the shots to take advantage of Jim. I mean, she looked happy to give him a ride home, but really if you think about it, it can all be viewed as just friendly and not really going anywhere. I really don’t think Jim would rush into another workplace romance.
I think when Pam said to Michael that she thought something would happen that maybe she meant that she thought he would do something foolish in public (like he does at every other gathering), not necessarily propose to Carol.
And (I’ve only watched it once, so may have missed something) I was surprised at Michael’s proposal. It seemed to come from out of nowhere. I don’t see how one brief conversation with Kelly’s parents would lead him to that point.
And I don’t see how Mike and Carol will continue to be together after this–a proposal after nine dates? I’d bet they hadn’t even slept together. She’s a single mom–I think she’d be really careful about jumping into a relationship. (and 9 dates over about 5-6 months definitely sounds like she’s taking it slow)
Okay–that was a really long ramble! Once again, Creed just killed me! I love how only one line from him can crack me up like that. I’d love to see more of him, but I think he’s probably funniest in small doses.

You mean women don’t like being impulsively proposed to in public while wearing a cheerleader outfit?
The three things I lost it laughing:
- Closer To Fine
- Apu from the Simpsons
- Michael’s opening talking head (”unpronounceable names”, “Hindu Halloween”, etc.)
Nice symmetry (if it was intended) that Jim and Pam both have trouble staying upright when they’re hammered. And I’ll have to watch again to make sure, but I wonder if they had a stunt double for John Krasinski to take the fall. If I remember right, you couldn’t see his face when he falls, then they cut to Karen pulling up in the car.
November 3rd, 2006 07:09
I am slowly beginning to enjoy the show less and l ess. That’s the problem, it’s turning into a half-comedy, half-drama and unnecessary cliff hangers. The show used to be loaded with one-liners. Now they are far and few because they’re concentrating too much on relationships. The show needs to hold back on the emotional stuff. It’s supposed to be a comedy.
November 3rd, 2006 08:16
James, I can see where you’re coming from. I really like The Office because of the office life and how real it was, but now they are going in so many different directions.
November 3rd, 2006 09:38
Classic line: “Ohhh -man these are not my shoes” When Michale was riding in the back seat of Pam’s car. And Angela protecting the shoes ??
November 3rd, 2006 11:00
Ya, the line about Michael’s shoes was very, very funny.
November 3rd, 2006 11:29
meg is spot on.
karen had that sort of “been there done that” look on her face, like she’s been through andy’s boozing-at-work stuff before, and now knows better, and just wants to drive home instead of being stranded at work. maybe she ended up in the bushes once…
November 3rd, 2006 12:25
Hey..notice on Jim’s name plate on his desk that he’s Assistant Regional Manager at Stamford. Pretty cool!
November 3rd, 2006 12:29
yeah, i agree about the ending thing. good episode though. especially the michael/pam part.
November 3rd, 2006 14:31
“maybe she ended up in the bushes once…” Or, maybe she ended up on Andy’s roomy twin inflatable bed. It is, after all, a roller-coastery thing with them!
November 3rd, 2006 15:27
Ugh, I can’t believe I missed this episode. So many things happened in this one. AHH!! That’s the last time I’m watching a bunch of tae kwon do students test for their new belts. I kept watching the clock the entire time. UGH!

Completely Random:
One of the songs played at the Diwali reminded my of this awesome clip from Wildboyz when they were in Bollywood.

am i the only one who thinks it’s interesting that pam can’t hold her liquor very well (Dundies) and now we find out that Jim can’t hold his liquor very well either?
November 3rd, 2006 17:21
oh I saw that too. I finally saw the episode so I’m up to date with everything now
November 3rd, 2006 17:57
jack m.,
no you weren’t the only one.
check comment #14.

Did anyone elsd find it amusing that Michael called everyone else ignorant for their lack of knowledge on culture, race, and religion? I got a good kick out of it.
November 4th, 2006 01:16
Thanks John and Brian! See how needy I am that I have to know EVERY single word in each office episode..LOL! I love this show!
November 4th, 2006 12:52
did anyone else laugh when Michael referred to himself as a “gringo”? He obviously thinks that gringo is a generic term for white person that can be used in any context…
November 4th, 2006 18:58
I think Karen faked the shots because, not only because she had been thru that with Andy before, but also so she knew the work would get done if she stayed sober and did it!
