The Convict Is More Clear

LITO reader Adam sent in this description from TVGuide.com of “The Convict” which will air on November 30th.

The Convict
Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, creators of the British version of “The Office,” penned this episode, in which Michael discovers that a new employee is an ex-con. Michael ultimately gets rattled when his staff begins equating the office with prison. Meanwhile, Andy (Ed Helms) receives tips on how to woo Pam from an unlikely source—Jim.

We knew the convict part, but we didn’t know the Pam courting would happen so soon with Andy. Obviously we have to see how they do it but I could see it happening one of a few ways.

  1. Jim could still be a little hurt about the Pam thing so he seeks Andy on her.
  2. Jim and Pam are in teasing mode again so he is seeing how she’ll get out of it. (Remember when Pam told Kelly so keep talking to Jim when Jim couldn’t talk back? Payback.)
  3. Jim wants to get Andy beat up by Roy.

Any guess of your own?

I have been wondering what a Jim-Roy scene would look like. Would there be any shared heartbreak or bonding between them?

I’m sure Jim’s tips for Andy will be hilarious. Will Jim advise him to be more Dwight-like? And will Pam decide to pull some pranks on Andy? I think last week was the first time we saw her take the lead on a prank against Dwight (the timing him running around the building…)

Jim is still hurt. But since Andy wants to know about Pam he gives Andy advice since it’s apparent that Pam doesn’t want him (Jim). Plus he’s, by his own admition, “seeing” someone.

It’s more a move to show himself how much he knows about Pam.

And maybe Pam will notice right away (what JIM has told Andy about her) and it’ll be even clearer to her how much she wants Jim.

Yeah, I agree… I think that Andy asks Jim and Jim gives him insane advice… like “sometimes she spends all day picking the little fuzzballs off of her sweaters,” or “she only eats pork.” Just so Andy can look ridiculous. Which will give way to some cute Jim/Pam moments and make Karen a lil’ jealous. Or something like that.

“it’s apparent that Pam doesn’t want him (Jim).”

I disagree. I think she (in her own Pam way) was really putting herself out there.

I agree that it will help her realize how much she needs Jim, but she really wants him. And I think Jim will purposely have fun with Andy on this one, as in tell him everything that Pam doesn’t like. It will be a good rebonding experience for JAM.
Plus, the fact that Ricky and Steve wrote it gives me a lot of hope that it will be brilliant.
I also like your third suggestion, Brian.

I can’t see any reason Jim would intentionally sick Andy on Pam. I am see Jim giving Andy some generic dating advice and Andy using it on Pam, but Jim would never make Pam the butt of a joke - which is essentially what that would be.

I bet when Andy uses Jim’s advice on Pam, Pam won’t know that Jim is behind all of it and in the end she’ll give Andy various reasons why she’s not interested which will initially get back to Jim through Andy and make it more apparant to Jim that Pam wants him.

i think jim is going to give andy ridiculous suggestions, like when he told dwight to buy a purse when he wanted to ask out katy. as cold as he may be to pam right now he’s nice enough to not actually give andy good advice, because i think he’d now pams not looking for someone like andy, even if he can’t see that she likes him. i think pam likes jim, i just don’t think she admitted it because, she called off her wedding because she realized she had feelings for jim not roy and needed time to get over that and find herselg. but then at the end of last week felt she couldn’t say anything because she knew she hurt jim and saw he had moved on. but i still maintain pam and jim will get closer again with time and admit their feelings.

When I first read the synopsis, I figured that Jim helping Andy pursue Pam was a practical joke on his part, much like he always did to Dwight. My opinion on this hasn’t changed. Although, given the Merger episode, perhaps Jim could be a bit more serious about it, but I doubt it. Also, the synopsis was released a while ago wasn’t it? I thought I had read that last week at some point.

    zomg I’m famous! =P

Knowing Andy’s character, I just can’t imagine it being serious. Jim is going to give him some rediculous ideas about Pam. Now the question will be whether Pam is in on the joke or not. And if she’s not, how will she react when she finds out Jim is behind it?

If she IS in on it, then it will be just like old times, playing pranks on Dwight. Which would be out of character for them now, since they are having a ‘thing’ ATM.

I don’t think Jim is “at that place” where he would do something mean at Pams expense. He is definately going to make an Ass out Andy. At Stamford, he never really got to spread his wings and play his jokes on people. Now that he is back at Scranton, he can let the charm fly and make an even bigger/better impression on the new love of his life.

I’m wondering…it’s pretty obvious from the Merger that Pam realizes that Andy is not someone she’d ever be interested in. Jim either gives Andy outrageous advice—and Pam figures this out and joins in on the fun—or somehow Jim’s advices causes Andy to come across as really sincere and Pam then takes a second look at Andy (thus backfiring on Jim, who is counting on comedy). Remember when concussed Dwight was friendly to Pan? And it took her a little while to figure it out?

Just think, what would an Andy freak-out look like in Scranton?

That’s very interesting Meg. I could really see that happening.

I read the NBC description of “The Convict”, and it has quotations around the word “coaching”, when it’s talking about Jim giving Andy advice. That leads me to believe that Jim will not sincerely give Andy viable advice to use to try and date Pam. We all know how Jim is, and he would jump at any chance to play a practical joke on Andy - since Andy is just another Dwight after all. I don’t, however, think that he will let Pam in on the joke, but in the end it will definitely NOT be her who the joke is on. I think i can see Pam realizing it at the end and smiling in her own way because she knows Jim didn’t REALLY try and stick Andy on her… I think it would be cute. But i can bet we’ll see a couple more Karen/Jim scenes in there too.

My theory is that Jim will give absurd courting advice to Andy and watch the show unfold. If things were “normal” between JAM, Pam may catch on and be in on the joke too when Andy gets his “mack” on. But, Pam may not get it and may even hear that Jim “coached” Andy, making it that much clearer that Jim has moved on (even though its still a little evident Jim’s not totally over Pam or what happened).

Sorry to double post, but I forgot to ask:
    1) Was anyone surprised that Jim said he is “seeing” someone in The Merger?? I was, just because it wasnt clear to me that Jaren was an item– just mild flirtation a la Jam.
    2) Do y’all think TO writers will Rachel/Ross the JAM relationship? (how awesome if the show ran that long?!) I hope they don’t because that can get really old, really fast.
    3) Finally, did anyone else think there was a metaphor when Pam asks Jim about not having anymore grape soda and Jim saying he’s into bottled water (read Karen) now? Maybe I’m reading into stuff a bit much. :)

Hey, Big Tuna, I definitely felt like Jim’s comment that he was “evolving” was his way of trying to say that he’s (trying to) move on. I didn’t make the connection that Karen was the bottled water.

    Go grape soda!

Big Tuna - i totally had the same thought re: Karen = water. Which is what I think of her (boring).
