Character Caricatures
LITO reader Kevin just sent me in this great drawing that he created of our Homeboy Jim Halpert. I think he did a great job and maybe with your encouragement, we can get him to do some more of the characters.
I’ve always wished that I had the ability to do caricatures like this. When I was young, I asked my mom if I could take a class. We saved up for the high price of lessons, I went to the class, and realized I had no artisitic talent at all. I don’t mind working for a talent, but I had none. So, I decided I’d just enjoy artwork from others and learn to play the guitar instead.

I would love to see a Dwight or Michael drawing. I would imagine they would have huge foreheads!

I was thinking of drawing Pam next and then moving on to Michael and then Dwight…But Andy is definitely moving up the charts…

Awesome drawing. I am Brian’s sister and I can vouch that no one in our entire family has artistic talent. Sad.
Anyway, I have a comment. You know what always bothers me? Whenever there are pictures for promos, for example, look at the picture on top of this page as the name for the blog- why is Ryan always in them? He’s also in that picture for the music compilation as well. I like Ryan and I think he’s funny, but I don’t consider him a “main character” from the show. I think Angela or Creed would be just as good. I don’t know why that bothers me so much.

Thanks for the great comments on the art! I really apprecviate it. Oh, and Jamie…that’s funny about Ryan…because it bothers me a bit too. I’m sure B.J. Novak is a nice guy and all but it always seemed wrong that he’s in all the main character group shots. Being one of the writers does have its privileges, I guess…. I suppose early on the thinking was that his character would be the one we would sort of relate to because he was the newest employee…

its cause he’s “sexy”

Jamie, originally, there were only five permanent characters on the show. Michael, Dwight, Ryan, Pam, and Jim. I read where the others (Angela, Stanley, Phyllis, Kevin, etc) didn’t get signed on as permanent until midway through the second season. Crazy.

I believe Ryan was meant to be the “hip outsider” that was not yet indoctrinated onto the business world treadmill. His character would then reach out to the young audience targeted by TV shows and their sponsors. Who knew that young audience would become so attached to Kevin? Or Phyllis?

Bob, yeah I’m 22 (probably not far from Ryan’s age), and Ryan’s one of my least favorite characters.

Kevin, your “Jim Halpert” is so good, you SHOULD do the rest of the gang. There are a LOT of us out there that think “All Office, all the time,” so your work will not go unrewarded.

Thanks! I will definitely work on the rest of the Office crew. Pam is next!

Jamie, Kevin is right. From the start, the ones who were contracted were B.J. Novak, Steve Carell, Rainn Wilson, John Krasinski, and Jenna Fischer.
