An Inside Scoop From Bob Vance

Bobby Ray Shafer added a new post to his blog today. It offers a little more on the Wedding episode:

In the summer of ‘55, my father, Bob married my mother, Phyllis Smith.

So here I am all these years and hard miles later standing on the altar under Hollywood TV lights getting married to Phyllis Smith. Bob and Phyllis. Again. And somehow it makes perfect sense to me and in the tuxedo jacket pocket over my heart I’ve a got a treasured photograph of them on their long-ago wedding day and their joy still shines through in it, and I’ve got that going for me and then the minister says, “And do you Phyllis take Bob Vance, Vance Refrigeration, as your lawful wedded husband?” And she says, “I do.” And then I said, “I do.” And we all said I do, then and now, now and then.

Michael got the giggles when we were filming “the fart scene.” In fact, at the screening of the episode, he said it was the hardest he’s laughed all year. I think it was the word pungent that kept getting him. Between takes he was kneeling in a corner trying to stop. I had to turn my back to him. But the real problem was watching the monitors for my cue and trying not to laugh and on the floor below me I can hear the Producers and Writers laughing and Scott’s laughing and I have NO IDEA how Phyllis is managing to keep it together, but then, suddenly, I realize, he’s about to open that door, damn-it! you better be ready! And I was.

There have been so many “highlights” for me in regard to all aspects of this episode; but my favorite moment was when we preparing to shoot the chapel exit and there was a lot of commotion and everyone was being silly with the rice and Phyllis got a little misty and whispered to me, “I don’t want this to end.” And I said, “I know. It’s been so much fun! But we’ll always have it on DVD!” And then we ran out to the van

Phyllis and Bob are awesome.

This was so touching, I got the “chills” as I was reading it. But, then again, it IS written by Bob Vance, Vance Refrigeration.

ok so this may sound like a TOTALLY ignorant question- but was that marriage real?

janie, yes and the show is really an office in Scranton, not a sound stage with actors in California.

OK, what’s going on? Next, I’ll find out that “Scrantonicity” isn’t a real band!

Matt, you be careful with that sarcasm. =)

I’m not even going to lie. I had to read the first few paragraphs twice so I could separate the truth from Office fiction. Once that was cleared up, it sure was an interesting story.

Thanks for the moral support Brian…and for clearing things up.

And hey- they do have some footage from Scranton.

Only in the opening credits Janie.

Bob’s blog was amazing. What an odd coincidence.
