“Ben Franklin,” Season 3, Episode 15

Quick Recap

Click “More”…it got a bit long this week!

Comments

What a fun episode! One thing I didn’t pick up on during my first viewing was Dwight’s telling question to Jim re: the stripper. “Redhead or brunette?” Jim refuses to choose, saying, “Blonde.” Then the camera cuts to Pam and Karen, the redhead and the brunette (though I’d consider Jenna a brunette as well). Another awesome and true-to-character moment was when Dwight, Jim, and Michael first meet the stripper. Jim admits he’s never seen a stripper, Michael texts Jim “Is she hot?” and Dwight tells Jim (right in front of the stripper) to text back, “Kind of.” Finally, I loved Michael’s insistence that Ben Franklin was a president.

I’ve read a few criticisms of Jenna’s performance (we know she was very sick while filming the episode) but I thought her semi-out-of-it state was pitch-perfect. After all, her scenes with Karen and Jim were supposed to be uncomfortable. She stammered, she had a Freudian slip, she made bad jokes . . . and it worked for me. What did you all think?

Quick Recap

There is an article from CareerBuilder on CNN.com entitled “What We Can Learn From The Office.”

They are a bit harsh on our favorite Scranton-ites, but it’s a decent article.

The sitcom features a collection of cube-dwelling characters who are occasionally offensive, petty, obnoxious, inept, annoying, self-absorbed or unproductive — or all of the above.

  • John Krasinski will present at the 2007 MTV Movie Awards on Sunday, June 3, at 8 PM EST (Steve Carrell’s Little Miss Sunshine is up for Best Movie and you can vote here up until June 3!)
  • You can hear John’s voice in Shrek the Third, in theaters now
  • John is featured in the next issue of Mean Magazine, which comes out on June 5
  • Check out Kath’s previews of inside the issue!
  • A review of Smiley Face reads that the movie is

“rounded out by a great, odd supporting cast (Masterson aside, there’s a great role for The Office‘s John Krasinski, playing the most un-Jim-like role of his career, as Masterson’s nerdy friend), and, of course, Faris.”

  • “License to Wed” comes out on July 4 (or July 3, according to this confusing iF Magazine report?)
  • Still no release date for “Brief Interviews with Hideous Men” (which John wrote, directed & performed in) but it’s in the post-production phase.  This is a major accomplishment for John.  Side Note: I’m reading the book right now, and it’s crazy.  I can’t wait to see how he adapted it into a movie!

The 59th Annual Primtime Emmy Awards will be presented on September 16, 2007.  Nominations will be announced at 5:35 AM PST on Thursday, July 19, but there is already buzz about who will go home with golden statues (or at least the satisfaction of being nominated!)

Awards Heaven’s EMMYWATCH 2007 predicts the following nominations: ”The Office” (last year’s Comedy Series victor) in Comedy Series, Steve Carrell (2005 Lead Actor-Comedy winner) in Lead Actor-Comedy, John Krasinski in Supporting Actor-Comedy, and Jenna Fischer in Supporting Actress-Comedy.  They also mention Rainn Wilson & Ed Helms as possible Supporting Actor-Comedy nominees, Melora Hardin for Supporting Actress-Comedy, and Rashida Jones for Guest Actress-Comedy.

The Aussiello Report offers a “Dream Ballot” that includes The Office, Carrell, Krasinski, Helms, and Angela Kinsey (Supporting Actress-Comedy).

I think it’s about time the supporting players (not to mention the behind-the-scenes crew) got a little love, especially Fischer & Krasinski.  I also hope we have repeat wins for “The Office” as Best Comedy Series and Carrell as Best Leading Actor-Comedy.

A full list of episodes that “The Office” will submit to the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences is listed after the break.

According to William Keck of USA Today, Jenna’s doing better and should be able to return to California next week.

  • West Coast LITO readers, take note!  Kate Flannery will be performing her one-woman show as part of the 5th Annual Los Angeles Imrpov Comedy Festival at L.A.’s Improv Olympic West.  The festival takes place from June 4-9, and Kate is not alone:

Office” mates Melora Hardin, Oscar Nunez and Angela Kinsey and talent from other shows including “Mad TV” and “Thank God You’re Here” are aboard, too…

(Click here and scroll to the bottom to read the whole clip)

  • NBC News: Kevin Reilly is out and Ben Silverman is in.  Could this be good news for “The Office”?  Hopefully!  Though Reilly was a major supporter of the show, Silverman’s company Reveille produces “The Office” and Silverman serves as an executive producer.

A new article in Newsweek proclaims that alpha males are out and betas are in! More importantly, though, they cite Jim Halpert as a prime example of betas, or relaxed and easygoing guys who aren’t solely focused on getting ahead.

The soul of “The Office,” and its stealth heartthrob, is actually easygoing, soft-spoken Jim (John Krasinski), who, in true beta fashion, turned down a promotion to management in the season finale.

According to author Jennie Yabroff, betas are all about the pleasure-seeking id, which definitely fits Jim’s prankster profile. But I’d have to respectfully disagree with another point: Yabroff writes that the sillier-looking beta males are, the better. I think that John Krasinski disproves that theory :-P .

First off, I need to express how wonderful David Denman is!! Despite computer glitches (he tried to send his answers to my questions three times before they got through), international flights, and an insane shooting schedule, he got back to all of my questions and was super-polite and friendly about everything.

LITO: Congratulations on completing a triathlon AND raising over $5,000 for the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS foundation. Any plans for future triathlons/fundraisers?

David Denman: Thank you so much for all the support. I had so much fun training for the first Triathlon I’ll definitely be doing it again. I’ll be doing the Nautica Malibu Triathlon on Sept. 16th. This time I’ll be raising money for Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. Hopefully I can raise another $5000.00 for this great cause. People can donate here

LITO: Do Pam and Roy belong together?

David Denman: I don’t know if “belong” together is the appropriate word. I don’t think the show is set up for them to belong together, but I would like to see them end up together. I know you all want Romeo and Juliet to get together, but trust me that will just get boring. Roy is the guy you love to hate and hate to love. What could be more entertaining then that?

1. Throwback Thursday, duh :-P !
Thanks to some savvy LITO forum-posters, we have separate threads for Votes For Next Throwback Thursday Episode and Haiku Contest Entries. Check them out!

2. TheTwoCents Conference Room is open all summer! A very cool way to see different perspectives from different Office fansite admins.

3. Brian Howard has compiled his own list of Office-related fun over the summer. I’m particularly excited about the Office Olympics in the LiveJournal community. The Office Olympics main page says it will be:

“a series of challenges and activities designed to alleviate The Office itch during the summer hiatus. Participants will be divided into four teams and awarded points for participation as well as placing in each of the weekly challenges and activities. Challenges will take several formats, including graphics, creative writing, and general odds-and-sods (non “creative”!) type activities.”

Sounds like a LOT of fun! More details will be released on May 31. You must be a member of LiveJournal to participate. I’ll post more details as soon as possible–if there are any LJ insiders out there, let me know :-)

4. Creed has a new blog post.

Have a great weekend, all! I’m off to go bridesmaid dress shopping…I can only hope the dresses will be as stylish as these:
