U.S. > U.K. “Office”, says Brit Mhairi McFarlane
Check out this recent article from the UK Guardian. Columnist Mhairi McFarlane writes that she prefers the U.S. version of “The Office” to the original BBC series. She does offer a few caveats, though, giving (much-deserved) praise to the original Ricky Gervais vehicle. It’s interesting (and exciting) to see a Brit describe the way I feel about both series. The article points out how the characters of David Brent/Michael Scott and Dwight/Gareth are different in the UK and US versions, yet work well in their respective contexts. McFarlane also asserts the show’s balance of comedic awkwardness and riveting drama, crediting the quirky supporting characters and the meaty leading storylines.
Overall, the bottom line seems to be the fact that the U.S. and U.K. versions are two different shows. Though the U.K. version inspired and grounded the U.S. show, “The Office: An American Workplace” has developed into a strong, independent program that is a force to be reckoned with.
