It’s the first edition of Throwback Thursday!
Throughout the summer, we’ll be flashing back and revisiting old episodes, with brand-new analysis, links, contests, & more.

First up?

“The Client,” Season 2, Episode 7

What a HUGE episode for this show! I didn’t realize it until I sat down to write this post, but WOW. So many things happen!

Quick Recap
The cold open is Michael and his beloved, dry-cleaned jeans. We hear about the staff’s worst first dates, including a background check (Oscar) and abandonment at a local hockey game (Pam), as Michael and Jan try to win a major account. The eponymous ‘client’ of the title is played to perfection by Tim Meadows, and the business meeting is conducted at Chili’s–the new golf course. Back at the office, Pam finds the now-infamous screenplay, ‘Threat Level: Midnight’ and the entire office crew performs a read-through. This marks a major point in two Office relationships: Jim and Pam share a rooftop dinner, and Michael and Jan share a kiss. Also, we get to see Dwight in his underwear (which apparently were changed at the last minute at Rainn Wilson’s request, according to BJ Novak).

Comments
A tremendous episode for JAM and Jichael. Remember, the episode before “The Client” was “The Fight,” which also has a lot of JAM tension. In this episode, Jim continues to test the limits of the relationship, commenting on the hockey game incident and calling their time together (by the way, was that the most intimate, heartbreaking swaying you’ve ever seen or what?) ‘a date.’ Again, Pam is put off. While she enjoyed herself just as much as Jim did, calling it ‘a date’ makes it too real for her. Michael is having his own issues with Jan, who is not feeling the love. The awkward phone calls set the stage for the rest of their crazy relationship. At the end of the episode, the look between Jim and Michael is positively priceless. According to Paul Lieberstein, it was the first idea for the episode, and the rest of the episode was written so it would lead up to that moment. This episode also introduces us to Dwigt, Agent Michael Scarn, and Michael’s killer drawings (actually done by producer Greg Daniels).

“The Client” Deleted Scenes

In the commentary, we learn that Jim’s best/worst first date was with Pam, just as you probably suspected. So sad! I wish this had made it into the episode. I also love the Pam-staring-at-her-desk and the Phyllis/Stanley deleted scenes. Remember, a kick and a chop are two different things!

Enjoy, mon!

And remember to check back for THROWBACK THURSDAY later today!

Check out this recent article from the UK Guardian. Columnist Mhairi McFarlane writes that she prefers the U.S. version of “The Office” to the original BBC series. She does offer a few caveats, though, giving (much-deserved) praise to the original Ricky Gervais vehicle. It’s interesting (and exciting) to see a Brit describe the way I feel about both series. The article points out how the characters of David Brent/Michael Scott and Dwight/Gareth are different in the UK and US versions, yet work well in their respective contexts. McFarlane also asserts the show’s balance of comedic awkwardness and riveting drama, crediting the quirky supporting characters and the meaty leading storylines.

Overall, the bottom line seems to be the fact that the U.S. and U.K. versions are two different shows. Though the U.K. version inspired and grounded the U.S. show, “The Office: An American Workplace” has developed into a strong, independent program that is a force to be reckoned with.

LITO reader George sent me an email about a cool new Office product:

The Office Talking Pen, available at Linens ‘N Things and various online stores (Toy Lounge, NBC Store, Amazon)

The Office Talking Pen

“I have a dream that you will really let the sparks fly. Get her done.”
“The Schrutes produce very thirsty babies.”
“Ooo, discipline, kinky”
“I’m the head of this family and you ain’t gonna be messing with my chillun.”
“This is an environment of welcoming, and you should just get the hell out of
here.”
“These are my party planning beeyatches.”

Random Office coincidence: As I was typing this post, my sister surprised me with a going-away present: THE OFFICE TALKING PEN! (Purchased from Linens ‘n Things)

YEAH OFFICE TALKING PEN!

Here is a clip from Human Giant on MTV of an interview with some of my favorite people from some of my favorite TV shows: John Krasinski, along with Will Arnett and Michael Cera of the late “Arrested Development.”

John doesn’t really talk about “The Office” at all, but I wanted to post this because I caught a few Jim-like mannerisms. It reminded me of something BJ Novak said in an old interview with the Boston Globe:

”He was the same natural he was in high school,” he says. ”You can’t tell he’s acting. I’m actually convinced that he doesn’t really know how to act.”

It’s one of my favorite characteristics of “The Office” – it feels so natural.

A petition is now circulating the ‘net calling for the reunion of Steve Carrell and Stephen Colbert. If you want to check out the whole petition and/or sign it, click here!

Dear Greg Daniels and the Producers of The Office,
As dedicated fans of The Office, we all spend time (especially in those sad summer months!) speculating about our favorite characters and their relations, as well as the perfect actors to play them. Who would Michael’s mother be? Who’s Larissa Halpert? But among fans, one idea seems to crop up far more than any other: Stephen Colbert as Gould, Jan’s chilly ex-husband.

Here’s a picture from the segment “Even Stephven” from The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. Personally, I love that “The Office” doesn’t rely on guest casting and rarely uses it (though “The Client” with Tim Meadows was amazing) and of course, this is just a petition started by a creative fan :-) But I think it’s a fun way to show your support for “The Office” and connect with other fans. That said, I would love to see Steven/Stephen go head to head again!

NBC reports,

* On Thursday, the one-hour season finale of “The Office” was #1 in the time period in adults 18-49, adults 18-34 and all key adult-male demographics. “The Office” scored NBC’s highest 18-49 rating and largest total viewership in the time period in 12 weeks. In the valuable demographic of adults 18-34, “The Office” topped its nearest competitor, ABC’s “Ugly Betty,” by a 38 percent margin of victory.

The full press release also notes that “The Office” is the ‘most upscale series in primetime.’ This means that of households with incomes of $100,000 and higher, “The Office” brings in the highest concentration of adult viewers (adults aged 18-49 are counted).

More good news for “The Office”: according to today’s Google blog, Creed Thoughts is ON FIRE. On May 17, the night of the finale, ‘creed thoughts’ was #7, ‘the office season finale’ was #17, and ‘melora hardin’ was #19. These aren’t simply the top searches, but terms with the biggest change in number of searches. I’m guessing that Creed Thoughts was the highest because before the finale aired, no one was searching for that combo. However, I’m sure there were lots of previous searches for Melora Hardin. I’d bet the reason she’s the only one of the actors to appear in the Trends list because people were Googling Melora were trying to find out if she’d, erm, upgraded in real life as well. Thanks for the tip, Eliezer!!

“The Job” Deleted Scene #3

Because we need some way to channel our excess energy on hiatus Thursdays! Throwback Thursday will replace the regular episode recap during the hiatus months.

So what exactly is Throwback Thursday? One episode will be featured each week. I’ll compile clips of the episode, any relevant news articles/features relating to that episode, deleted scenes, analysis from different outlets, and other fun features.

What I need from you: VOTES for which episode to be featured next (in the FORUM). SUGGESTIONS for features (e-mail them to me). Assuming The Office will premiere on September 27, 2007, we have exactly 18 Thursdays. Each week, everyone can post their votes in the forum, and the one with the most votes by the following Wednesday will be featured that Thursday.

Housekeeping business: I announced a while ago that Life In The Office will begin a brief podcast. The tentative inaugural podcast will be the Season 4 premiere. Still working on the audio clips. Since I don’t have a Mac, I can’t use the same software Brian used (Wiretap Pro). Any suggestions for a PC program that could do the same thing?

Edit: I apologize for the double-post. If the above link to the forum doesn’t work, click on the link to the forums, then click on the Office Talk section (listed under Topics), then click on the thread called “Throwback Thursdays.” If you’re new to the forums, be sure to check out the other sections, as well! We have a very active forum community and it’s always a good time.

Responses have been trickling in from LITO readers who attended Saturday’s Scranton event. Remember to check out their new official website at www.TheOfficeConvention.com . Be sure to view the pictures and video in the Media section.

DJ John Webster writes that the party with Angela Kinsey and Brian Baumgartner didn’t stop until the wee hours of the morning. Check out that post and this one for lots of Scranton visit pictures!

My friend Andy was in Scranton, as well. He and his friend had an all-around terrific experience. Although the line was long, line-dwellers were kept satisifed and smiling with soft-pretzel coupons, stickers, and entertainment by a live band. Andy told me that Brian and Angela were REALLY friendly, chatting up the line while signing autographs, telling stories, talking to people on cell phones, and just generally being awesome. He met people who had made the trip from places like Canada and Wisconsin, and some southern states as well. He got there a bit later, but some fans had been camped out since 7:30 AM, and they heard a brief speech Brian and Angela gave before they started signing autographs. (Pictures coming soon!)

I also have heard from Michelle Dempsey, one of the Convention organizers. The visit was a smashing success and she said the stars really loved “The Bog” in Scranton.
