Top Ten Ways to Stave Off the No-Office Blues

If you’re anything like me–and since you’re on this site, I know we have at least one thing in common–the news that the WGA strike talks were halted a few days ago threw you into a dizzying spiral of despair. What can we do, while the networks start churning out such reality hits as a prime-time version of Big Brother, Celebrity Apprentice, and the truly, truly awful Baby Borrowers?

We can get creative.

So in the spirit of desperation, I present to you my personal Top-Ten list of Ways to Stave Off the No-Office Blues.

10. Cry.
9. Wipe those tears off and donate, or at least stay up-to-date with the latest strike news.
8. Check out other projects done by the Office cast. Watch (or re-watch) The 40-Year-Old Virgin (and keep an eye out for Mindy Kaling!). See if you can find a copy of Jenna Fischer’s Lollilove. Go catch Juno at your local art theatre. (I saw it a few days ago and loved it.)
7. Dig out your Office DVDs and watch all the special features. The commentaries in particular are great–it’s like getting to hang out with the cast for an extra half-hour.
6. Riffle through the Office bin at Target. Take pictures of yourself with your favorite bobblehead, notepad, or mug, and post them on the forum.
5. Set up your own Office Olympics. Let us know what games you invent–and what medals you take home!
4. Play an Office drinking game. Watch “Drug Testing” and take a drink every time they say “urine”. Or for the more ambitious, bored, and iron-livered, watch the whole second season and drink every time Jim mugs for the camera.
3. Plan an Office-themed party for International “That’s What She Said” Day. Sure, it might not be until February 15th, but a good Yaaaaaankee swap takes time to organize!
2. Write a fan script, then in an act of writer solidarity, refuse to act it out! (But feel free to share it with us. Ten points to anyone who wants to start a LITO round-robin fan script!)
1. Help others suffering from Office-withdrawal by posting your own ideas in the comments section!

I LOVE Suggestion #2. So, today, in my spare time, I plan to write an absolutely brilliant Office script… which I will then NOT act out, not even for ten points!

There are very talented LITO-ites who have posted their fan scripts here, and it would be fun to see some new work… now more than ever.

    10. Find a limit to how much or what kind of things you can put in jello.

    9. Hide someone’s cell phone (perferably someone neurotic) and keep calling it from a safe location.

    8. Pretend there are documentary cameras following you everwhere. Feel free to mug for them or sit in a small room and have conversations with them.

    7. Really take a trip to a beet farm and send me a postcard.

    6. If you’ve lost the ability to pretend why not make the documentary happen. Go to your work and start filming. Find out dirt on others and claim footage is for your art form, if they want to beat you up.

    5. Watch Extras with the lovely Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant.

    4. Start a “Scranton” on Sims 2 with everybody from the Office. (God, help me I was close to doing this.)

    3. Go ice skating.

    2. Watch the British Office and get into a debate about who you would rather work for: Michael Scott or David Brent? (Or who would kill one another first: Dwight or Gareth?)

    1. Daydream about what that dinner party at Michael’s house would be like and plan your own. Give people race cards. Stir that racial stew! Then when things go horribly wrong; order pizza. Then kidnap the delivery person.

Nice list, Meghan! Funny you should mention #4…my little sister downloaded a Dwight Schrute Sim onto her computer. She says she’s still looking for the other characters online.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to kidnap a delivery person…
