I remember when Seinfeld wrapped up its successful 9 year run, and everyone was speculating about the TV possibilities that awaited Jerry’s co-stars. As it turned out, the road was pretty rocky for them; Supporting players like Jason Alexander and Michael Richards, although wonderful in their roles, often don’t have the “star-power” to carry a show by themselves. In my opinion, Rainn Wilson falls into this category.
This spin-off would stink like one of Phyllis’ room-clearing farts. There’s no other way to spin it.

LOL… wow. I too have no real good feeling for a Dwight Schrute spin-off…. but I probably would’ve expressed that notion a little more delicately than you did. Lol..
But you know what? I think your assessment is on the nose.
Certainly sounds as if this could be the last season. If yes, I pray the next few episodes center around the wrap up of the “documentary” and maybe feature some big-name guest stars (Steve!). I mean, how sad would it be if it just…ended?!
Donna, I don’t think THIS will be the last season. The Office’s ratings are somewhat down but still respectable, and NBC doesn’t have much in the way of a replacement at this time. But by NEXT year, things may look very different. Other Office stars like JKras may not renew their contracts, and then the show would probably limp to a conclusion at the end of Season 9. The network may be trying to plan for that scenario, by exploring “spin-off” options.
Here’s a spin-off idea of mine: A show based on Vance Refrigeration. If any of the Dunder-Mifflin ensemble wanted to sign on as Vance “office” employees, that would actually make sense. Plus, Bobby Ray Schaeffer was charismatic, Phyllis is lovable, and they could KEEP the same setting for the show. The expectations would be lower than a Schrute Farms spin-off, but I think it has possibilities. “Vance Refrigeration” could be… cool.
I like your idea Bob, but it doesn’t seem as if Vance Refrigeration requires as much of an office staff as DM does. It seems like all he has at his office is a reception area where his secretary sits and his inner office. It’s a lot smaller than the DM space. Also, I didn’t think Bobby Rae Shaffer was given that much comedic material to build an entire show around; he’s more of a supporting character.
I agree that the show will most likely not end this season. From the reports it looks like NBC is trying to pull the actors whose contracts are up at the end of this year into renewals.
Suri, it is true that Vance Refrigeration doesn’t seem to require Dunder-Mifflin’s large staff. But then again, Schrute’s beet farm/bed & breakfast doesn’t need much of a staff, either; and NBC is kicking THAT idea around! (and Cousin Mose, the ONE Schrute farm “regular,” more than likely isn’t available.)
Besides, Phyllis could easily slide in as Bob Vance’s receptionist, and then they would need at least ONE part-time accountant… and maybe one part-time “quality control” guy, like Creed.
And then there are the delivery guys and gals. I always thought Roy should have hired on to lug reefers and such. He’d be perfect. MADGE would be perfect, too.
Heck, since Vance is right next door to DM, let ANYBODY stay on that wants to. Erin, or even Pam would be a welcome semi-regular, who stops in to borrow copier toner.

Thanks for the laugh, Jonny. We could use it around here, even if it IS…. “gallows humor.”
