Haikus Are Laid To Rest

Tuesday, November 14th, 2006
Image

After starting strong, the haiku contest participation has dwindled so today we lay them to rest. We can’t help but notice that the participants were few when he died. But of course, we all know, that doesn’t mean Mr. Haiku was forgotten because I’m sure the other 7,000 daily readers cared for him very much. He will not be forgotten.

Amen.

Haiku Contest For “Diwali”

Sunday, November 5th, 2006

It’s time for one of those famous LITO haiku contests. This week it will be about the episode Diwali.

I think we’ll stick with just haikus. The Limericks didn’t bring in a lot of competitors. (And it may have scared a few away.)

For those of you visiting for the first time, a Haiku is a “Japanese lyric verse form having three unrhymed lines of five, seven, and five syllables, traditionally invoking an aspect of nature or the seasons.” So basically, you have to have three lines of 5, 7 and 5 syllables and they don’t have to rhyme. Of course, instead of nature or season, we are going to write about that weeks episode. It can sum up the whole plot, or just one part that you liked. After a couple days, we’ll choose a winner.

Don’t blame the big man
Kevin has a foot disease
That JAM not as sweet.

I turn it over to you…

Vote For “Initiation” Haiku Winner

Monday, October 30th, 2006

Well, there’s been plenty of time to enter the last haiku/limerick contest so it’s time to vote. Here are my favorite.

1) Dwight tried to initiate Ryan
And we know just how hard he was tryin’
But “planting his seed”
That’s more than we need
I just hope to god he was lyin’.

2)This episode, it sure was dandy.
Michael ate pretzels and candy
Pam kept his log
(will it go on her blog?)
And the squeaky chair ended on Andy.

3)The temp was tested by A.R.M.
He did well until threatened by harm
Then he was like, ‘Dwight!
I’m not going to fight!
Plus you have a really weird farm.’

PS DwightK, you rock with these limericks. It was a good start for everyone. I think I’ll start next week’s nearer to the episode airing so that it’s still fresh in our minds.

Which is your favorite for Initiaton?

Haiku (And Limerick) Contest For “Initiation”

Wednesday, October 25th, 2006

I know this has been a long time coming, but I guess it is okay since we have a full two weeks between new episodes of The Office. It’s the traditional haiku contest (By the way, number 4 won last week. I’m sorry I never got the post up. The new pregnancy news got things hopping around the house. This time we’ll use a poll for voting to make it easier.)

This week is going to be a little different. You can still offer a regular haiku, but we’ll also accept Limericks this time around. If you need to be reminded what happened in the last episode, you can get your watch on here.

Haiku:

Three lines that don’t need to rhyme, but need to be 5-7-5 in syllables.

Limerick:

Five line poem that rhymes in a specific order. (A, A, B, B, A) We won’t be super picky since this is the first time. I’ll try my hand at a limerick to get things started:

Michael stood in line and boasted
He knew exactly how his treat should be toasted
But the best pretzel of the day
Wasn’t found in the hallway
It was the one Dwight Schrute and Cousin Mose did!

That’s my best shot, anyone else?

Vote For “Grief Counseling” Haiku Winner

Wednesday, October 18th, 2006

It’s Wednesday morning so we better vote for the Grief Counseling Winner before the next episode airs. We didn’t have quite as many haikus this time around. (In fact, comments and page views have gone down quite a bit since i changed to daily emails. Maybe that wasn’t such a good idea. If a tree falls in the forest and there is no one around to hear it….I’ll have to decide what to do about that and where this site should go.)

Anyhow, here are my top four choices from last week.

1) Karen needs some chips
They tried the vending machine
Did you check … your butt?

2)Karen prefers Herr’s
As well as Jim’s affection
Does Jim prefer hers?

3)Ed Truck should have ducked
That truck took poor Ed Truck’s head
“No-Head Ed” got trucked!

4) A bird set ablaze
will not rise from the ashes,
because Dwight stomped him.

Which do you like best?

Haiku Contest For “Grief Counseling”

Monday, October 16th, 2006

Mondays mean back to work, monday night football, and a LITO haiku contest. This week with Grief Counseling we have so many scenes to choose from.

PS, I saw that a few of you suggested Limericks. I think that’d be fun too. Let’s try limericks next week.

But for now, here is my haiku:

Who’s that bearded man?
He is stealing our Pam from class.
Out for her heart too?

And now it’s your turn. We pick the winner on thursday morning. This week the top three finishers will get to pick any Office episode they want from the iTunes store. Fun.

Haiku Winner For “The Coup”

Thursday, October 12th, 2006

Well, the voting is done for the haiku contest this week. Gretchen is our winner with the following haiku.

Crentist sure can’t help
Dwight replace his princely crown
Michael’s throne is safe

It is safe to assume two things. First, we like haikus that use words with doubl meaning. And second, we like haikus that have three separate lines, as opposed to a sentence that is just broken into 5/7/5 syllables. Good things to keep in mind.

Congrats Gretchen.

Vote For “The Coup” Haiku Winner

Wednesday, October 11th, 2006

Wednesday morning means only one thing. It’s time to decide the “Best Office Haiku Writer Of The Week.” Here are the five finalists. Just leave a comment on which one you like and why. We’ll run it for 24 hours.

1)Have some M&M’s…
You say his name was Crentist?
Dwight, we need to talk.

2)Call of Duty, fine!
Midday shopping trip, Jan’s there!
But movies, hell no.

3)He still misses Pam.
It’s proven by just one word:
Pretendinitis.

4)Crentist sure can’t help
Dwight replace his princely crown
Michael’s throne is safe

5)Just Tap S then D
Do you have any last words?
Jim dies, love is born

Haiku Contest For “The Coup”

Monday, October 9th, 2006

The haiku contest for last week was so good, I’ve been looking forward to the one for this week. This time, we write about “The Coup.”

Here is my Haiku for The Coup:

Dwight loves his waffles
But after Michael’s lesson
Dwight was what he ate

I now turn over the reins to you…
