I think this idea is fun to kick around for this reason: It doesn't have anything to do with the current plot lines. It doesn't matter if Pam is pregnant, or who's dating who or anything. It's just another day at the office. But this particular office can really bring the "funny" on any given day. In the proper hands, of course.
I still find myself wondering if this week's episode will feel any different with John Krasinski directing. We all know that the writers write... the lighting people light... the make-up people make-up... but I'm not exactly sure what the "director" brings to the party. (You stand here, and you stand there... now, act "surprised"...) There must be more to it than that... |

Another cold opening idea that we kicked around a little was Michael Scott obsessively entering the New Yorker cartoon caption contest. So, I can picture him being upset because, like all his other entries, his "Uranus" caption was not selected. He would be tersely announcing to the whole office that the "New Yorker needs to get their collective heads out of... THEIR-anus!" Jim and Pam would make "Jim and Pam" faces, while Dwight laughed hysterically. Toby would sadly say "Michael, we need to talk..."
Are there popular internet forums where fans are kicking around cold openings for the "Big Bang Theory?" |

Lol... That's a good question. I've never seen that show... but a lot of other people have. That show has almost twice as many viewers as The Office. |
Here's the deal-io for me: I've seen a couple episodes of "The Big Bang Theory." Its... its... its a sitcom, just like "Two And A Half Men," and a thousand others that came before. Set-ups, punch lines, laugh tracks... some are funnier than others, but they all pretty much follow the established format. I can't see myself bothering to contribute to a "Big Bang" forum.
I'm not sure whether "The Office" changed my way of thinking, or did I always think like that, and this show just came along and validated my thought processes. As it might have for you other LITO-ites out there, too. Maybe we've always conjured up "talking heads," and lived our lives as if they were endless/pointless documentaries. KG, you've written so many of these great Office scenes, that I can't help but think that you've always summarized your life like that.
Well, I see I managed to go off on a deep tangent at 11 AM here. Imagine how far my argument would have gone if I'd been drinking at Poor Richard's... or, smoking a "clove" cigarette with that girl with the lip ring! |

YES, YES, YES!
That's its EXACTLY. It's our "brand" of comedy. Plain & simple! It's always the little/awkward things that crack me up. And "talking heads"? Fughedaboutit! The stuff going on in my head is a constant circus. I would venture to bet that my fellow LITO-ites heads are also happenin' places to be. _________________ "Sandals Jamaica Mon" |

... Now that I think about it, I've always been a fan of "awkward moments" and "pregnant pauses," characteristic of The Office. And maybe I really like the absence of a "laugh track" because all these years that's the reaction I've been getting when I try to be funny.

This sounds like a really good/bad pick-up line in a bar, delivered by the likes of Andy Bernard: "I'll bet your head is a happenin' place to be." |

Well Robert, (aka, bartender-extraordinaire) you are definitely the go-to guy for cheesy pick-up lines. Not that you're delivering them yourself. But in your line of work, you must have overheard some real doozys! _________________ "Sandals Jamaica Mon" |

I could tell you dozens of doozys, but I'm really proud of this: Last week, a happy couple came and spent some time with me at the bar. They've been married five years now, and they have an adorable little boy, so they don't get out that much anymore. But they got a babysitter, and they wanted to reminisce with the bartender (me) who was responsible for their good time on the night they met. I didn't exactly "fix them up," but I was there facilitating things as the ice was being broken, and they both credit me with a huge assist in their initial "good vibes." Of course, once the sparks started flying, I knew my work was done! That feels really cool, to have played a bit part in people's good memories!
Of course, it doesn't always work out that well, though. This story reminds me of other dreadful ones that would be more at home in the "Koi Pond" thread!
Oh, and I'm pretty excited about tomorrow's new new "Office." I've got a good feeling about this one. |

That's pretty cool, Bob! Wow. That must've made you feel good to know that you played a part in their happiness. That's really sweet. _________________ "You gotta get out there and EARN, son!"

This story is definitely one of my "Greatest Hits" as a "social coordinator." If other LITO-ites have any great (or disastrous) tales as a matchmaker, now would be the time to tell them. This might be apropos, because according to the Ausiello Files, an upcoming Office episode involves Michael Scott being "fixed up" with a new love interest. I don't know if sparks fly, but I bet hilarity ensues. I wonder who plays the Dunder-Mifflin "fixer-upper?" |

Oooh yea, these I need to hear! Update Koi Pond when you get time.
Cool true-love story btw!
Heading up to VT today. Happy Superbowl everyone. Bringing laptop, so I'll be lurking... _________________ "Sandals Jamaica Mon" |

Have a good trip, Donna! |
KG, it's up to US now to provide Donna with material worth lurking over! This is a pretty daunting task... we have to compete with the Superbowl on TV, the wild and crazy house-party in Vermont, and the commercials. LITO is going to have to "ramp it up," and do something... ... I don't know, "spongeworthy," or whatever...
Get your "game-face" on! (not exactly a "game-face" here, but you get the idea.) |

OK I'm going to update the Koi Pond Thread with something I just found in the 'net that fits in nicely. I'll add my own observations when I get a chance. |

So this girl is my new Facebook friend, and she suggested that all of us "friends" should get together and play a little game: We type our first names into the Urban Dictionary, and we post online what the "urban slang" definition is. Ooookay, so I go to urbandictionary.com, type in "Bob," and it comes up... (ahem)... "Battery Operated Boyfriend." Well, that sure rubs me the wrong way!
Is it any wonder that I've been leaning towards the name "Robert" lately? |

LOL.... Wow. How did Ann take that? That needs rephrasing, doesn't it? AH.. how did Ann feel about... oh, forget it. _________________ "You gotta get out there and EARN, son!"

ha ha! That's a good one, "Battery Operated Boyfriend"!
All those facebook updates that suggest you do something are too much pressure! Did you see the last one to go around, "post a pic of a celebrity that you look like". I declined, rather than try to think of some celebrity that I look like.
I had to laugh at my one fb friend's response to that update query though. He said, "Why would I want to ask my friends which celebrity I look like? I don't need a list of overweight 30-something male actors on my page". I thought that was a good response! _________________ "Sandals Jamaica Mon" |
