4 FEB 2010: (via Wikipedia) Sabre comes in to take over Dunder Mifflin and Michael has difficulties accepting their new policies. Erin is waiting for Andy to ask her out while they work on a welcoming song for the company's new owners. Meanwhile, Jim and Pam interview for a local daycare center they hope to get into. Kathy Bates guest stars.
Directed by John Krasinski
Episode threads are usually unlocked after airing PST. Plot and title subject to change and we have no control over that. |

By golly, I liked this episode. Now, I've got to get some sleep, then rise and shine tomorrow; I'll grab a cold Yuengling, kick back in the hot tub and write up a recap for LITO.*
*I'm kidding. I don't have a hot tub, and Yuengling is unavailable here in the northwest. But I think I can still punch out a recap. I just hope I can make it... lurker-worthy! |

I liked it too. Poor David Wallace. One of my favorite characters has been just struck dumb by this chain of events. Having been laid off a few times, I can definitely relate to him. You just feel wiped out and unable to do a whole lot at first. You try to get another gig and when nothing happens it just paralyzes you. You could see the frustration his wife was having with him. But he should've had a good severance package, He can afford to chill for awhile. I suspect that will be the last we see of Mr. David Wallace, seeing as how he got to close out the episode. SUCK IT!!!!
Jim finding that guy on the kiddie toilet killed me. And the meeting between Pam, Jim and potty dude was another cringe classic. Oh man. Pam just puts it out there, doesn't she? To quote Jim from "Fun Run": "Well... there it is."
Michael's conversation with Kathy Bates was another cringe-inducer. Wow. She is no joke. I'm glad Michael finally got her point.
And yet another Cringer: Andy and Erin's conversation at reception. I wanna kick Andy. Hard. Twice.
Good episode. Mr. Krasinski did a fine job directing, I enjoyed the camera work with the potty discovery. I like seeing how directors approach a scene. Instead of giving us a bunch of vantage points and set-ups, he just gave us one fluid( ) shot of the whole discovery. Very nice. And he even directed himself giving a very good Jim-Face (What does a rainbow taste like?). Good seeing a classic Jim-Face again.
Good stuff! _________________ "You gotta get out there and EARN, son!"

Bob, you kill me. Can't wait to see your recap. I'm not so sure how I feel about the episode. It seems like they are trying to lure people in with fantastic guest stars. I knew about Cathy Bates, but I had no idea about Christian Slater. I happen to love him, he had me at Heathers. However, the laugh factor was just not there for me. Don't get me wrong, I liked the episode. I just didn't really find it funny.
I think the best part was the Cold Opening. "Scissor Me" is going to be my new catch phrase. I love how as soon as they taped the box back together, Michael's cell phone rings from inside it. Classic Michael. It's easy to see that the new product placement company is Apple. Gabe had an iPhone and a Mac laptop. I was truly amused at how "nonsensicle" the Sabre video was. It's almost as if Michael found his video making soul-mate. He seemed truly impressed by it. However, we know how set Michael is in his ways and as soon as Gabe mentioned "site blocking" it was downhill from there. The water bottles cracked me up as well. I thought green week was months ago.
I wonder how much they had to pay to use the Miley Cyrus song??
The subplot of Jim and Pam going to check out the daycare was the best part of the episode for me. First of all, how great was that day care center? I've never seen anything like it. It didn't look too infant friendly, but there may have been an infant nursery upstairs. I really like the guy that ran the day care. I can't remember the name of the actor. But I've definitely seen him in other sitcoms and I've always liked him. The interview was hysterically akward. I can't believe how much Jim is turning into Michael. First the infantry joke and then walking in on the daycare owner in the bathroom. Logically the door wouldn't lock for the children's saftey. I've heard plenty of nightmare stories of kids locking themselves into rooms accidentally. It happened to me with one of the babies while we were on vacation. The door had a button lock and no door stopper, so whenever the door knob banged into the wall, the button got pushed in and then if you closed the door behind you (or a baby playing with the door closed it), you got locked out. Luckily, that kind of lock only requires a bobby pin from the other side to get it open, negating the purpose of the lock in the first place. So the baby was no worse for wear, but I totally get the saftey issue.
Anyway, back to the episode and the part I really liked most - DAVID WALLACE. David has truly gone to seed since losing his job at DM. This was apparent the moment he was excited to see Michael; of all people. I really don't get why David always liked Michael. He seemed to be oblivious as to how much money Michael was costing the company which is probably why he lost his job.
I thought it was cool that they used the same actors for his wife and son as they did in the episode where David and his wife throw a dinner party back in S3. Seeing him make peanut butter and fluff sandwiches for his son really brought back memories. However, I can't figure out why the kid wasn't in school in the middle of the day.
His truly absurd "Suck-It" idea was clearly brought about by depression as he is probably having to pick up after the kid now that he's home and he probably thought the house cleaned itself while he was at work every day (welcome to the desperate houswives club David). I loved the tag scene where he and his kid were singing, "suck-it, suck-it". It was like a bad heavy metal song. Even Michael was put off by him. The most intelligent thing he said during the episode was, "There are very few things that would keep me from wanting to be in business with David Wallace and Suck-It is one of them." Every once in a while Michael has a true moment of clarity; that was one of them. As he leaves David's house he makes the decision to embrace the changes since it would be better than losing his job. Bringing in Florida OJ, since Sabre is headquartered in FL brought Michael back to himself as he takes way too long to make a toast. You knew he was really back when he said the OJ tasted metalicy and it really gets you in the filings.
I did enjoy the episode, even though it wasn't laugh out loud, there was a lot of cringe-worthy moments.
Great directing job John Krasinski. Now that you've directed an episode of the office are you going to Disney Land next?
I had to throw that in since Sunday is the superbowl. Have a fun superbowl weekend everyone. I don't even know which teams are playing. |

Here I am, with my back against the 8-ball, trying to write a comprehensive episode recap, facing a deadline, and you guys are distracting me! Let a guy work, will ya!
HDF, I love having oddities like this pointed out. Why wasn't that annoying little brat in school? And odder still... why didn't my wife Ann, the teacher, notice this last night night? I'm going to e-mail her right now in her classroom, to point this out!
That's enough foolin' around. This recap isn't gonna write itself. |

I liked the episode. I didn't think that it was all that funny. I wish they would figure out a way to keep the new David Wallace around. I thought that when the the daycare guy said, "You guys aren't as charming as you think." was kind of breaking the 4th wall. Thats why i love so Jim and Pam is the banter. _________________ I don't spell too good, and my grammar is abysmal. That's an interesting thought, Iquit. Almost like the daycare center guy was saying what a lot of fans have been thinking... that's deep, Iquit. I mean, deep in a good way. Not just deep for deep's sake.
Now, several Red Bulls later, my recap is finished and posted, and I can back to my "comfort zone" here on the forum. Sometimes a guy's gotta ride the bull, am I right? *
*Wrong, in my case. I can't stand "energy" drinks. I don't like that "wired" feeling. Red Bull really gets me in the fillings. |

When I was really young under, like under 5. My friend thought it would funny to lock me in the bathroom, and turn off the light. I freaked out. I think they had to end up taking the doorknob off the door. _________________ I don't spell too good, and my grammar is abysmal. My first theory was that by the time Michael Scott drove to David Wallace's home, somewhere near the New Jersey border, school was out for the day. Then I realized David was making LUNCH for his son. SO, now my guess is that he's just one of those bratty kids that takes a lot of days off. To stay home and pound on his drums. |

Wow, I can't believe something I said prompted an Ann post. I really feel honored now.
Iquit - That sounds like a scary thing for a 5 yr. old to have to go through. Although most people have a similar story of childhood trauma. It's sort of right of passage I guess. |

HDF, your little, tossed-off observation packs a punch. I repeated it at work, telling it to the other bartender, while people at the bar could overhear it. Everybody thought it was fascinating, even those folks (hard to believe, but they exist) that don't watch The Office. It prompted stories from everyone about similar movie and TV "mistakes." Well, they're really not mistakes, but uh... "head-scratching scheduling conflicts." One gal remembered the movie "Fatal Attraction," where she said the deranged Glenn Close character sort of "kidnaps" a kid from school and takes him to an amusement park... that is full of happy, little children on all the rides! Uh... why weren't all those kids in school, too?
I've got a harrowing bathroom story as a child, also. Maybe LITO needs a new thread. I hope the guy who played the daycare center director in "Sabre" is, uh... enjoying his 15 minutes of fame! |

ba-dum, bum!
Just got back from VT and caught up on my Office too! I thought Sabre was great. Right from the C/O with Erin singing, "I've got a big box, yes I do!" then Oscar murmurs, "I don't think you know what you're saying". I was like that's awesome!

Loved the Christian Slater cameo! Suri, I think every woman in our generation has a little love left for Christian and his 80's version of Jack Nickelson-dialogue in Heathers.
But more importantly, I can't imagine that any of us hasn't sat through one of these nonsensical videos before. Jim's expression said it all when Christian spouted the line, "did you ever taste a rainbow?" I remember sitting through an OSHA video at work a while ago that Oprah Winfrey appeared in. Wonder how much they paid her to tell us about blood-bourne pathenogens?

I hadn't thought of that line in quite that way before you pointed it out iquit. Maybe the writers are checking out the blogs and seeing that the bloom is indeed off the JAM-rose and they are responding to it in their own snarky way? I can see it.

Ann, I will admit that it didn't even dawn on me why the kid was home from school until those two smarty-pants (yeah, HDF & Suri ~ I'm talking to you two!) pointed it out. I immediately saw the need for the kid's presence though. We needed that kid banging away on the drums while David Wallace made a fluff sandwich to point out the extent of his desperation since he lost his job. I loved that he couldn't even hear himself think. Why? Probably because I have a mean-streak. Or, maybe it's because my almost 7 year old son got a drum set from Santa this year and I'm seeing a bit of myself in David Wallace? Hmm...best not to think on that one too deeply!
Anyway, I think the kid being home from school was a gaff that they were willing to deal with because they needed a noisy, annoying kid banging away on his drum set so David Wallace could seem all the more sad and beaten-down.
I think my favorite part of the whole ep. was the Kathy Bates bit. Ooh, she's going to be a force to reckon with! I don't think she suffers fools, and boy is she ever going to have a field day with our favorite fool ~ Michael. I can't wait to see those two butt heads!
The daycare bit was funny. That's always embarrassing to walk-in on someone in the bathroom. I do admire how the writers are not making JAM too over the top cutesy. They still have them in uncomfortable situations all the time. It's not new, but it's still refreshing to see JAM stumble along in the show. I would hate it if they suddenly became this untouchable tv golden-couple. _________________ "Sandals Jamaica Mon" |

Or maybe you're son is just playing his drum set too much and it's starting to get to you.
Maybe you should replace the drums with one of these , a little easier on the ears. |

OK, so this smarty-pants just got finished watching the full three-minute promo for this Thursday's Office. And I laughed so much I almost peed in my smarty-pants! Whoa, I don't know if the rest of the episode will live up to that promo, but I thought that was funny. Kathy Bates is a hilarious force-of-nature, and the tentative, tense way the office staff deals with her is spectacularly cringe-worthy. Dare I speak the words... Instant Classic? Nah, better not, forget I said that. Could be a jinx.
Hey... ... I just watched a 3 minute promo. That's, like, 15% of the whole show! |
