02 DEC 2010: When Michael reads an article about China growing as a global power, he decides they must be stopped before they take over the United States. Pam threatens to move Dunder Mifflin to a new building after everyone in the office complains about Dwight's building standards.

OK, the topic is unlocked. I liked this episode. It wasn't a blockbuster, but I thought it had a nice "feel" to it. Good, solid ensemble work, no smell of desperation, no "jump-the-shark" premonitions. It was a worthwhile way to wile away a half-hour, says me. What say ye?

I think I liked it a lot more than you two did. I thought it was a very good episode. Good A, B and C plots and great character interaction. Some emotion, Pan and Dwight sparring, which is always fun and the reveal that Pam may be the only human being on this planet, even including Michael, that Dwight genuinely cares for. I've always loved their relationship. He's shown in the past that he has a soft spot for her. Making her his assistant to the assistant, defending her to Danny Cordray and now letting her win even while swearing that he doesn't care are all little touches that make me love Dwight/Pam scenes. And I've always been a sucker for reveals in episodes and the ending for this one elevated my opinion of it significantly.

The little tidbit of Oscar's nickname ("Actually") was very funny. I enjoyed seeing that character foible in Oscar, where he is the big know-it-all and couldn't stand for Michael to be one up on him. "Suck it, Oscar!" indeed.

I even enjoyed the Daryl/Andy subplot. A quick little sidebar with a nice ending. Cool.

Plus, this episode took place almost entirely in the office, centered around annoying things people do in an office. That's what I want to see when I turn on this show. That's the name of it, after all.....

I have a Scrantonicity question for you, Bob. Does Scranton actually have any 5 digit addresses? That's a standard in California because some of those streets run forever. But is that the case in your hometown? In New York, Broadway runs from lower Manhattan all the way up to the Bronx and the adresses still only go up to the high-5000's. That seems like an awfully high address....

Here's the deal-io for me: My expectations were really low for this episode. The synopsis didn't bode well; Michael Scott taking on China sounded way too broad. So I tuned in to the show with this feeling of dread, that I was sitting down to watch a train-wreck-in-slow-motion. And what-do-ya-know? It turned out to be really good, well-written, with a lot of heart. I think I was in a mild state of shock after it was over.

I known several people that always think they are right, similar to Oscar. And like Darryl, I've had a few acquaintences such as Andy that try a little too hard to be my friend. Relatable situations... that's what I call good writin.' Confused

Good Scrantonicity question, KG. I'll research that.

Likewise, Bob. I saw the synopsis and thought this was going to be terrible. The B story sounded cool but it sounded like it was going to be buried underneath a really bad and, as you perfectly called it, "broad" A story. But it turned out really well. I was stunned too. Eh? Eh? Eh? Very Happy

That's the beauty of a well-written episodic TV show that runs awhile. We get to see all these different facets of characters beyond their clichés. I was enthralled by the stairwell scene where Pam confesses to Jim that she doesn't want to fail again, like with art school. When Jim tries a positive spin, she sadly says "I'm not an artist." Wow... that was riveting.

sorry I was just being silly i liked that part. I was really liked this episode. It is a lot better that the novel that I wrote for nanowrimo this year. The only Pam/Dwight thing I can think of is the cold open where Dwight paied erin to pretend to win an art contest. to screw with Pam.

IQuit, you wrote a novel? I didn't even know you had an interest in writing! Good for you. I followed the link, but only found the homepage to a writer's web page. Where could we find your novel on this link?

that's wonderful!

Can we find you under November's winners? If you wouldn't mind, include a link to your novel on this page. You know our little group is interested!

Speaking of writing (though no where near ambitious as IQuit's novel) my recap is up on the main page.

I am on the winner list somewhere. I don't really want to put my novel out there right now, it was a lot of work to finish. I need to do a lot of editing and structural changes and coming up with a better ending. I will just start editing in January. I will have to have a real final draft probably by the end of this tv season.

Here is an excerpt though

Matthew Greenly walked out of Gabriela's apartment a changed man. What he should have done was say just **** her and never talk to her again, but of course he couldn't do that it had been so long since anyone liked him, or even pretended to that he couldn't give up so easy. Maybe there was some way to her heart. Maybe there was a way to actually figure this chica out. What was he going to do? Eat some more cheeseburgers. Well actually, no. Maybe the reason that she didn't like him was that he was too fluffy. Then maybe that is what he has to do. Maybe he has to give up the cheeseburgers to get the girl. maybe. He mumbled to him self, "I will give up cheeseburgers for a while," while shaking his fists in the air, as he walked back to his apartment.

Iquit, that's quite exciting to learn that you are a novelist! Dancing And your work earned recognition as a winner on the writers' website, too. Think Very impressive!

Donna, I just logged into LITO's adminstration page, and rescued a nice reader comment from "moderation limbo." I check in "moderation" a lot, because comments can get lost there. "Kelly" enjoyed your recap, as did I. Very Happy

Here at LITO, I have struggled to write a few Office cold openings, where the "action" lasts a duration of about 30 seconds. So, I am very impressed with any creative mind that can conjure up a story of novel length. Wow. To be able to weave a complex tale encompassing a long period of time, or a lot of twisting and turning developments, and to do it in a cohesive style... that's a real gift. Stick with it, Iquit! Very Happy

Besides my sad, little 30 second Office vignettes, I also struggle with recaps and "Scrantonicities"... like the one for "China" that I posted today. At least the show has been giving me little tidbits to work with lately!

Understandable, IQuit. Thanks for sharing your excerpt though. I like how your refer to your main character as "fluffy". I've heard that synonym for heavy a few times and it never fails to crack me up.

Good luck on your editing process. And please do keep us here at LITO informed of your progress. Smile After all, you're one of "us". And we take care of our own!

Hey Kev, clue me in will ya? I feel like this is some pop-culture phenom that I've never heard of (and that just won't do!). Wink

I hate it when the action lasts a duration of about 30 seconds! Twisted Evil
But I don't believe that for even one second about you, Bob! Shame on you
I believe your writing has staying power.
Yeah...writing! What did you guys think I was talking about? Wink Liar

You know how I feel, but it beasr repeating I think.
Get ready for some major butt-kidding. Ready? Here we go!

Bob, I think you have real talent as a writer. You find the humor in situations and portray it so well in your writing. Short (*ahem) though it may be, it's potent. I truly enjoy reading what you've written and hope you keep right on doin it!

Sidenote: ha ha! OMG, how have I NOT used the growing nose icon yet? !That is now my new favorite emoticon!

Iquit posted the link for it... here it is again:

www.nanowrimo.org

An artist I know was writing one for this a few years back... I don't know if she ever completed it or how it was received. Maybe one day I'll try that...

I totally agree with you on Bob, Donna, whether you were butt-kidding or kissing. Very Happy Bob is a very talented and witty writer. He builds his articles very well, so that they come back to the original point and have an ongoing theme. And it's funny, as well. I don't get you, Bob.... Eh? Think Not talking but, honestly, as an artist that can doubt my own work very much, I think I understand you more than I care to admit.

OK, I read this and I burst out laughing. Since my mind always puts things in an Office context these days, I can picture Donna saying this as a "talking head," although Kevin's gonna have to write the convoluted dialogue leading up to it.Laughing

And Donna makes another good point: Kevin, how could we possibly be neglecting LITO's "growing nose" icon? Liar LITO's emoticon collection is pretty sparse compared to other websites, and some of what we do have don't even work anymore. But that "growing nose" keeps right on thrusting, and it barely gets touched. We've got to start sticking it in around here. Use it or lose it; and I'm not butt-kidding. Wink

LITO has truly evolved into a "Finer Things" club for me. There may be only a few of us left, but I prefer to think that LITO has "right-sized" itself down to the essentials. Very Happy
