14 APR 2011: Michael's replacement appears in the office, to start receiving training from Michael. The new manager, Deangelo Vickers (Will Ferrell), has everyone hoping to make good first impressions: Andy finds himself awkwardly typecast while Jim and Pam worry that they've come on too strong. Only Dwight is apathetic about the new leader.

Well, this is different. The early returns over at OfficeTally are pretty negative for Training Day, and my first impression of the episode was good. And I'm not even a huge Will Ferrell fan. Usually, almost everybody at OT loves the show, and I've been known to take a while to get all warm and fuzzy.

Training Day have a few laugh-out-loud moments, and lots of cringe-out-loud moments. I'd give it seven-and-a-quarter stars. That's out of ten, of course. Confused

Oh, and not that anyone will care, but I changed my avatar to reflect Steve Carell's dwindling time left on the show; notice the symbolic darkness that is slowly enveloping Michael Scott. (I know, BFD.) Rolling Eyes

That is highly unusal Bob. Normally OT is all warm and fuzzy regardless of how bad an episode sucks. I didn't think this episode sucked, but it wasn't as good as the last few. I did like the way Will Ferrell played off Steve Carrell and I thought he fit in well with the rest of the cast as well.

I think the negativity may be coming from the fact that reality is setting in that Steve is actually leaving the show; even though they know he's already gone.

I did notice that you changed your Avatar Bob, really deep and meaningful man. Rolling Eyes

Thanks, HDF. Unlike Deangelo Vickers, adequate isn't good enough for me. Not talking My goal is "deep and meaningful."

Hey, the first "Training Day" deleted scene is up; I really like the references to The Onion. Laughing

Avatar change is a big deal around these parts! Love it & the double-meaning. Way to go "deep" on us. Twss! Hey wait, can I say that now that Michael Scott is outty? Think

I normally love Will Ferrell. In fact, I think he bears a passing resemblance to my husband. Most of you are my Facebook friends so you can tell me if you agree with that or not I guess. Anyway, besides looking a bit like Alex, I find him to be very funny. Not so much in this episode. He was just ok. Sad And in Office-land, that's not good enough.

But....

Instead of only dwelling on the negative, I'm going to try something new and focus on what I did like about the episode.

-liked Kelly's "meet-cute"
-liked Andy's "i guess this is my life now"
-Erin's confusion over how to answer the phone.
-Deangelo's total dismissal of Pam's legendary secretary skills.
-Deangelo's closing line about Ce-ce

Hopefully, Deangelo will grow on us.

and...

I forgot about one of my favorite lines in the episode. Reading Bob's Scrantonicity reminded me of it (thanks Bob!)

"What will you miss most about Scranton?"
"I'll miss the mountains"

Not a funny quote unless you're privy to the fact that he's moving to Colorado!

That line was absolutely classic Michael Scott! *sigh* I'm gonna miss him! Sad

Donna, Ann and I did an investigative side-by-side photo comparison of Alex to Will Ferrell this morning. And this is how we looked: Shocked Shocked

In the pictures we chose, Alex's cheeks seemed to be a little chubbier, and Will Ferrell's hair was longer and less clean-cut around the ears; but other than that, there was quite a resemblance! Wow. Very impressive. Alex and Will... Think ... separated at birth? Laughing

Many commenters over at OfficeTally reacted really negatively to Andy's subplot, as the Deangelo's "funny guy." I thought it was a hilarious highpoint of the show. Andy's "slapstick pratfalls" reminded me of a clumsier Kramer. Very Happy

I am willing to bet that all the guys over on OfficeTally didn't like the episode because of how DeAngelo shot Jim and Pam down. I KNOW that was reacted to very negatively over there. Personally, I think they screwed up and it was a good, cringey moment.

I liked this episode. I mean, it doesn't stand a chance coming on the heels of "Garage Sale" but I thought it was good, entertaining, funny stuff.

Donna, your husband DOES look like Will Ferrell. That's funny, too!

Oh yeah.. recap is up! Thanks for the patience!

Annnd... our patience has been rewarded with a fun read! Very Happy

I can relate to Andy's dilemma in this episode, where DeAngelo's first impression of Andy as a "funny guy" is overblown. A new manager started at my place of employment a few months back. She was standing in the bar, quietly observing the staff at work. All of us were making "first impressions" on the new boss.

When I first approach a guest, my style is to be serious and polite. Then I adjust my demeanor based on verbal and visual clues from the guest. If they are "all business," Neutral then I'm "all business." Neutral If they indicate that they are sad Sad then I'm sympathetic. Sad And if I sense that they had a hard day and they need a laugh, Very Happy then by golly, I can do that. Very Happy I'm not a technically spectacular bartender. I don't know a million drinks, I can't juggle, I'm not a wine expert... but I'm good with people. And if "the people" want wild and crazy, Dancing well, they're gonna get that. Dancing (within reasonable bounds)

So our new boss spent her first few days "observing" us in action, and by coincidence, all she saw of me was my serious side. That's what was called for in every situation that she saw me involved in. She actually took me aside, and told me I should "lighten up" around the guests. Shocked My new manager's first impression of me was pretty far off the mark. So, I totally understand the misunderstanding at Dunder-Mifflin. That was really good writing.

Wow... she REALLY got the wrong read on you, Bob... lol.. it just goes to show you that even given a few days to observe you can still get the wrong impression.

I mentioned in my recap that Michael bringing in the PB&J sandwiches definitely belonged in his top ten of d$@k moves and that we should make a list. So I was just thinking about some of his past crimes. This is in no particular order:

• Dumps Pam's mom while at dinner with her, Jim and Pam.
• Convinces Dwight to take the rap for the Golden Ticket fiasco and then tries to retake the credit when it ends up looking good.
• Throws Holly's Woody doll into the trash and then pours coffee on it (that was astounding to me).
• Tells Andy that Angela is sleeping with Dwight (actually, this isn't really a d$@k move... it really should've been done. But I wouldn't have done it. And I certainly wouldn't have done it and left, leaving everybody else to deal with it).
• Throws Phyllis' car keys under her car to slow her and Karen down during a sales race (ok, that probably isn't top ten... but man that was not cool.. lol...).

Alright, what am I forgetting? Michael has done a lot more d@$ky things than this!

Oh my God. How could I forget spilling the beans to the whole office that Jim was in love with Pam? Oh yeah, that belongs.

OK, off the top of my head... Think ... how 'bout, uh... Episode One, Season One... Michael Scott made Pam cry by (jokingly) telling her she was fired for employee theft.. Crying or Very sad Arrow Pam Laughing Arrow Michael. That was harsh.

Laughing Most Office fan websites are holding Steve Carell/Michael Scott lovefests. We here at LITO are chronicling his worst moments. I loves it! Someone should edit all these mean Michael moments into a video; we need an appropriate song to accompany it. Boo hoo!

How about "Creep" by Radiohead. Lol... Maybe that's too harsh...lol..

And there you go, Bob, Michael being a major jerk right out of the gate. That's perfect! I forgot about that.

I was also thinking about when Pam set up Michael and her landlord and Michael was a complete ass during their little coffee date. That was pretty bad. But right now I'm leaning towards dumping Pam's mom and dirtying Holly's Woody Shocked Shocked Shocked as my two top low points. I gotta think of more...

"Creep" by Radiohead made me laugh out loud. Laughing But it might be too harsh... Think ... Maybe the old dance song "Cool Jerk." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PPBmndl3H4g&feature=related
Michael sure can be a cool jerk.

That debacle in the coffee shop with Pam's landlord was brutal! Mad I almost cringed myself inside-out during that scene.

Lol... yeah, that was really rough. And "Cool Jerk" is very funny, Bob!

I was checking the LITO homepage on the slim chance that somebody left a comment... and lo and behold, somebody did! Shocked This girl posted a cool video of Michael Scott's most awkward moments: http://rush.popsugar.tv/Michael-Scotts-Most-Awkward-Moments-Office-Video-15696277 It is similar to what we're talking about here, and a fun way to spend 2 minutes. Very Happy

I still like KG's idea to list Michael Scot's meanest moments, like soiling a Woody. Wink
