I'm new here and just wondering what music all the other Office fans listen to, so I'm stealing a gimmick from The Onion called "Random Rules" To play, get your iPod or MP3 player, hit "Shuffle Songs" and list & comment on the first 10 songs that come up. No skipping tracks that you're embarrassed by.

Here's mine:

1. "Good Day" by Luce
A terrific, feel-good, summery song. I like it's positive vibe. "it's a pretty good day - I'm looking forward to tomorrow" Coincidentally, this song was used in a furniture commercial that my best friend directed and my neices and nephew were in.

2. "If You Intend" by 10,000 Maniacs
I love Natalie Mercahnt's voice - especially on the ones where she really belts it out, like this one. I think her solo stuff has been too subdued.

3. "Mallo Cup" by The Lemonheads
An early tune from Evan Dando and company before he became an alt-rock darling. Raw androckin', if not as catchy as the stuff from their mid-90's heyday.

4. "Suzy Lee" by The White Stripes
This is from their first album that just blew me away when I first heard it. I didn't know if it was great, but at least it wasn't like anything else. This song is a bit plodding, however.

5. "Not Ready To Make Nice" by the Dixie Chicks
This is the version from last years Star Lounge Collection from an L.A. radio station and this is actually the first time I've listened to it. Hmmm...I'm no country fan, but this Ok and a pretty good response to what they've been through.

6. "(Like A) Zombie" by The Wallets
Please tell me someone else out there remembers this Minneapolis band from the 80's - at least their almost-hit "Totally Nude". This is a funky little number from their second and last album "Body Talk" I read that their lead singer now does the music for Target's TV commercials.

7. "Superdeformed" by Matthew Sweet
A great song that I think was an outtake from the "Altered Beast" album that ended up on the "No Alternative" compilation. I saw him perform this song live a few times and I have no idea why he didn't deem it worthy of inclusion on one of his albums.

8. "The Break" by Soul Asylum
From the "So I Married An Axe Murderer" Soundtrack. For a while, Dave Pirner was one of the best songwriters in Rock. This was at the tail end of that time. Great imagey and clever wordplay backed by a great hook. Their new album - "The Silver Lining" is pretty good, too.

9. "In My Command" by Crowded House
Live version from the "Farewell To The World" CD. I love all things by the Finn Brothers - Split Enz, Crowded House and their solo stuff. They prove pop music need not be idiotic. I'm looking forward to the upcoming Crowded House reunion tour almost as much as the Police tour. Almost.

10. "Sunglasses At Night" by Corey Hart
Proof that I didn't skip the embarrassing stuff. This, I guess, is the danger of being able to put your whole music collection in the palm of your hand. People always refer to him as a one-hit wonder, but it seems to me he had at least a couple other popular songs lkee "It Ain't Enough" and "Never Surrender". Listening to this - it's amazing what we once considered worthy of a purchase. Plus I got the album cover art up on my iPod and is it just me or does he look a lot like David Duchovney?

Well, that's it for me. I look forward to everyone's input - but then again, I'm kind of a music geek.

1. T-Pau - Heart and Soul
Total 80s song, I love it.

2. Hot Hot Heat - Middle of Nowhere
I first heard this in a Office tribute vid on Youtube and had to download it right then. Just an awesome song.

3. Diamond Rio - Unbelievable
Very cute and catchy song by Diamond Rio, one of my favorite country groups.

4. Adam Sandler - Grow Old With You
The Wedding Singer is my favorite movie of all time. Adam Sandler is so adorable in it, especially when he's singing this song at the end.

5. Sugarcult - Bouncing of the Walls
Fun, catchy song.

6. Madonna - Santa Baby
One of my favorite Christmas songs. I prefer this version to the original.

7. The Foundations - Build Me Up Buttercup
Classic song, I don't know how you couldn't like it.

8. Deep Blue Something - Tonight
I first heard this song in BASEketball, loved it ever since.

9. Kyle(from South Park) - I A Jew On Christmas
Awww, I feel so sorry for Kyle in this song. I haven't watched South Park in a while, but I listen to this from time to time because it's so cute.

10. Buckcherry - Crazy B**ch
Kind of a dirty song, but the beat is so cool I had to download it.

Fun idea! I don't have the ipod, but I'll use my little mp3 player.

1. Jason Mraz "Rainbow Connection"
I heard his version long before Andy Bernard's or anyone else's and it gave me chills. He is hands down one of the best artists I've heard revamp old songs. Love him.

2. Joshua Radin "paperweight"
nice little duet. I downloaded a bunch of his songs after hearing his song "cry" when I was learning choreography for a dance piece.

3. The LOST Podcast with Jay & Jack - yeah, I'm that big of a nerd. But they're a really fun and well balanced podcast.

4. Josh Radin "The One"
One of the batch of his songs I downloaded. Very mellow listening, but I like his voice.

5. Hal Ketchum "Smalltown Saturday night"
And cue the embarrassing song...My college roomates listened to country ALL THE TIME and this one got stuck in my head. Now that I don't have them in my life, I get a craving for some country every now and then.

6. Death Cab for Cutie "Transatlanticism"
One of my favorite Death Cab songs. Their music is awesome--I feel like it's an epic score to a movie.

7. The Police "Magic"
No joke. It's been stuck in my head since Phyllis's wedding.

8. Avril Lavigne "How does it feel"
I liked this song the first couple of times I heard it, so I downloaded it. I'm kind of tired of it now though.

9. Jason Mraz & Tristan Prettyman "All I want for Christmas is Us"
A really really pretty duet they performed live, but never made it to the recording studio as far as I know. I get really tired of normal christmas songs so I love it when something is novel and not too cheesy. It's not Christmas time, but I love it anyways.

10. Jack Johnson "Better Together" (live aol sessions version)
I love his music. Before the tragic death of my ipod I had all of his albums. It's such the perfect balance of peaceful and happy.

1. Rise Against - Swing Life Away
Very carefree song about just that, swinging life away. A nice acoustic vibe with great background vocals. "we live on front porches and swing life away, we get by just fine here on minimum wage."

2. Sherwood - Something Worth Knowing
First off, Sherwood is an amazing unknown band. They have a very bright feel to them and are very skilled in lyrics writing. Look them up, you will be thankful. This song by them reminds me of my good friends. "we both pursue something worth knowing, but i may not end with the same thing as you."

3. Jekyll And Hyde musical - Letting Go
I'll admit, I'm a sucker for musicals. I play the trumpet and have played in my high school's pit band for them and I loved it. Jekyll and Hyde is one of my favorites, this song is a very beautiful duet from it. "letting go, when the time comes i know i shall return someday, but til then this is when i have to find my way."

4. Explosions In The Sky - Goodbye
Oh man how I love this band. They are all instrumental and create amazingly moving songs with wonderful guitar lines and drums. They did the soundtrack for the movie Friday Night Lights and this song is from it. These guys bring tears to my eyes, not afraid to admit it.

5. Kansas - Carry On My Wayward Son
Ah yes, a classic song. Awesome guitar and vocals. Just a great rock song.

6. Rogue Wave - Temporary
This is a great indie band, this the closing song from their second album. A great acoustic with strings that add great atmosphere. Look this band up as well.

7. John Mellencamp - R.O.C.K. In The USA
I go to Indiana University in Bloomington where Mellencamp grew up. This song rocks and what makes it even cooler is it is a tune we play in the stands for marching band and basketball band.

8. The Get Up Kids - Close To Home
This is one of my favorite bands ever. They changed my life. I grew up listening to these guys and I could always relate to their songs and they give an amazing concert. I was lucky to go see them on their farewell tour in 2005. This song is from their second album Something To Write Home About, one of the best selling albums in their genre. It is very hard to classify these guys, they are rock but emotional but not 'emo' but indie as well. Whatever they are, they are outstanding and speak to me like no other band can.

9. Paul Simon - Mother And Child Reunion
A great singer/songwriter. Got introduced to him in my history of rock and roll class. This song has a sweet island feel. From one Paul to another Paul, I love your music.

10. John Powell: The Bourne Supremacy soundtrack - To The Roof
I love soundtracks as well and love both Bourne soundtracks. This is actually my favorite one from Supremacy, very suspenseful and spy like. Has a wonderful strings with a melody making you feel like you are being chased.

I actually don't know this song. I've never seen the movie but my friend said that the soundtrack was good so I got it. I'm a sucker for soundtracks.

1. It Aint Me, Babe ~ Walk The Line Soundtrack
I LOVE this movie. I'm not typically a big country fan, but after seeing the movie, I downloaded the entire soundtrack and am now in love with it as well.

2. Unfold ~ Jason Mraz
Not one of my favorite songs of his, but Jason Mraz is one of very favorite artists.

3. Road Outside Columbus Ohio ~ OAR
I've been an OAR fan for many years, and am sooo excited that they're becomming more and more now. Their comination of sounds and lyrics make them true artists. And this song in particular is my favorite in this album.

4. Cecila ~ Simon and Garfunkel
I can't help but get this song stuck in my head.

5. Harder to Breathe ~ Maroon 5
I always feel like I'm at the gym when I listen to this song, since they play it in there constantly. I'm not a huuge fan of Maroon 5, but I do really like some songs. And Rashida Jones song backup for them!

6. City of Angels ~ Goo Goo Dolls
Beautiful song, beauitful lyrics. One of the few songs in existence that can make me cry.

7. The Lion Sleeps Tonight ~ Three Dog Night
Hehe. I always think of the Lion King when I hear this....as well as my great uncle, who was the band's manager for a bit.

8. Chandler Gay ~ Phoebe Buffay
I have every song of Miss Buffay's on my iPod!

9. No Good Deed ~ Wicked
I'm a HUGE Broadway musical fan...and Wicked is one of my top 3 favorites. This song is incredibly powerful and seriously sends shivers up my spine.

10. All Been Said ~ Matt Nathanson
An amazingly talented artist than unfortunatly not too many people even know of.

1. Garbage - "Deadwood"
A b-side (or g-side, even), my favorite non-album track. The band didn't like the finished song, but there's something familiar about this song that I just can't place. I love it. The guitars layered over Shirley's vocals are amazing.

2. Nuclear Rabbit - "Smearing Wet Concrete"
The album this is on is more heavy, hardcore-sounding than what Nuke used to play. Their prior albums are more eccentric, weird, and fun. These guys put on a fantastic show. So much energy!

3. Inkubus Sukkubus - "Fire of Love"
Oh, my gothic club dancing industrial phase. The vocalist has a very haunting voice. This is another one of those fast-paced goth songs.

4. AFI - "The Mother in Me"
Oh, AFI, how good you used to be. Fast, loud, roaring guitars. I miss these guys. This album, "Answer That and Stay Fashionable" - so freaking good.

5. Scarling. - "Manorexic"
You might remember Jessicka from her previous band, Jack Off Jill. Well, she's still got it - their site has a pretty good description:

Quote:
Though it’s difficult to truly describe Scarling’s sound ( live or recorded), it's been said that Scarling. is a charming cocktail of “nu-gazer” hallucinogenic, blissfulness, and post-grunge raw intensity, but it sounds so much better coming from Alternative Press who said“ Scarling. sounds like being French- kissed by the most beautiful beings in the world, and then being unable to stop the bleeding. Really alluring yet massive stuff.”

Their first EP, "Sweet Heart Dealer" is something I like to put on repeat. Hauntingly reminiscent of The Cure...on crack.

6. Massive Attack - "Man Next Door"

Of course Massive Attack are more known for their songs "Angel" (used widely in movies) and "Teardrop" (the theme to the TV show "House, M.D."). This album, "Mezzanine" is a beautiful work of trip-hop. It's good music to...uh...sleep to... Yeah.

7. Further Seems Forever - "Just Until Sundown"
Ah, I prefer this Chris Carrabba, only because I can't really get into Dashboard Confessional. This CD, "The Moon is Down" is kind of ruined from repeated listening. I'm so fortunate to have an electronic copy, haha.

8. Human League - "Don't You Want Me Baby"

Classic 80s nostalgia. Apparently Marilyn Manson and Shirley Manson recorded a cover of this, but it has yet to be released to the public. Neither party liked the final product, but I have an inside source that is thinking about just leaking it to us. w00t! I like this song, but I am more partial to their song "Human".

9. Neko Case - "Star Witness"
This girl can sing. She inspires me to keep singing and playing guitar. This song in particular was the first I'd heard of hers. It makes me want to roll up the cuffs of my jeans, tie up my plaid shirt in front, grab an old skool glass bottle of Coca Cola with a friend and run up the hill to crash down onto the grass on our backs and watch the stars up in the sky. I'm tempted to upload the song to share with you guys just because it's so good. It's a really sad song (lyrically), but it's still so, so good.

10. The Verve - "The Freshmen"
Oh man. Freshman year of high school-flashback. Yes, this song hits such a soft spot in me because not only was I a freshman when this came out, but I listened to it a lot during a pivotal period in my life. I get a little emotional when I hear this song, just not as much as I used to back then.

Good stuff. I think I woulda had more of a variety had I used my iPod because not all of my music is on my laptop.

2. OMC - How Bizarre
This one takes me back to when I was a kid. And it's impossible to get out of your head.

I LOVE Michael Buble. I have 5 different versions of this song on my computer and this is my favorite.

4. U2 - Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me
2nd coolest song ever, in my opinion(Elevation by U2 is the 1st). I just love it.

From the Scream soundtrack. I have 3 versions of this song on my computer and this is my favorite.

Holiday – Weezer
Love Weezer. Especially their old stuff. This song is a classic "Weezer" song.

Consequence – The Notwist
This is some UK band. Very melodic! Almost Death Cab for Cutie-ish.

Feeling All Right – Lauryn Hill & The Gorillaz

Love Lauryn Hill. Love the Gorillaz even more, a nice cruise song.

Street Fighter 2 Vega’s Ballad – McVaffe
I am obsessed with video game music. And McVaffe is a genius at remixes.

Nachna Soniye – Kam Bhamra
This is a remixed bhangra song. Bhangra = a type of East Indian dance.

I can’t – Radiohead
Radiohead is a bad after my heart.

Fade Together – Franz Ferdinand
A slower, yet still has that indie vibe, song from one of my favourite bands.

Sick Cycle Carousel – Lifehouse
This song reminds me of high school. Very deep, and I was so into this band in high school.

I Got Rhythm – Lena Horne feat. Q-Tip
This is from Take the Lead soundtrack, mix of Jazz and Rap. Very catchy!

You Talk Way Too Much – The Strokes
I  dance rock.

All You Need is Love - The Beatles
Need I really comment? This song is awesome and really good if you like to sing along with what you listen to (And who doesn't?!). As is the new LOVE album!!

Hammer to Fall - Queen
Not my favourite Queen song but a good one none the less.

I Will be Here - Raze
Random on Christian hit wonder. This is probably the cheesiest song ever. So wonderfully 90s.

Crazy Frog Sounds-Crazy Frog
I really gotta stop letting my little brother use my computer!

Heard Em Say - Kanye West and Adam Levine
The collaboration of two really good artists. Though I haven't heard much from either of them in a while. The video for this song reminds me of Sesame Street. All in all, really easy listening.

As Told by Ginger Theme - I think Macy Gray
Yes... I love my cartoon tv show theme songs. I think this one's the best. Its short and to the point with it's awesome message and the show is sooooo cute!

Gettin' Ready Rag - From the Musical of the same name
Best musical I've never seen! I love every single song on the soundtrack.

The End - The Beatles
Abbey Road altogether was an awesome album. The End=musical masterpiece.

Volunteers - Jefferson Plane
One of the reasons the Forrest Gump soundtrack is the best movie Soundtrack EVER!

Because - The Beatles
Yes folks... in case you haven't noticed, I love my Beatles!! Very Happy

I have a share of country mixed in with my musical tastes, and I love all three of those songs.

Well, the Brian White one is ok, I just really like his other stuff (One Small Miracle, You Don't Love Me Anymore, Not Supposed to Love You)

Shameless is one of my favorite GB songs, not to mention the video with the white piano and red paint is awesome.

And the Tim McGraw song is good too, I love the line

"And yesterday I knew just what you wanted
When you came walking up to me with him
And I told you that I was happy for you
And given the chance I'd lie again"

And for all you country haters out there, gimme a break, I was raised in south Louisiana. Laughing

Well I obviously don't feel like getting any work done right now! Very Happy

1. Foolish Love- Rufus Wainwright
Oh, I love me some Rufus. Definitely reminds me of my sophomore year of college when I randomly bought a CD of his.

2. Get Him Back- Fiona Apple
Fiona's great for when you're feeling moody

3. Wonderful- Wicked Soundtrack
I haven't actually seen this show yet but I'm obsessed by the soundtrack

4. New Deep- John Mayer
Off of Mayer's second album, which I didn't like as much as the first. I haven't heard this song in forever

5. Catalyst- Anna Nalick
Anna also sings "Breathe" which you hear in every other episode of Grey's Anatomy haha. But I saw her in concert in DC and she was awesome even though she had laryngitis (sp?) at the time

6. Quiet- Rachel Yamagata
I downloaded this because of How I Met Your Mother- hardly any of the songs that they feature on the show are on the DVD. Is that a pathetic reason for liking a song? Wait, better not answer that...

7. Song For A Friend- Jason Mraz
um, I have no idea. I don't think I've ever heard this song before!

8. Within You Without You- The Beatles
ooh, trippy Beatles are the best kind of Beatles

9. To Your Love- Fiona Apple
more Fiona! I must be feeling angsty today Wink

10. I Want You To Want Me- Cheap Trick
yessss. Great kareoke song!

okay, yay, not embarrassed by any of those songs!

I totally agree with you! I have Brian White's albums on my I-Pod and Rebecca Lynn came up when I shuffled. I was obsessed with him when I was in high school. I had a big crush! Smile I saw him in concert twice and got to meet him. I also gave him a rose. Hee Hee. When you're 16 it doesn't get any better than that! Laughing He always seemed like such a good guy.

I've always been a HUGE Tim McGraw fan. I love him. He's the perfect man as far as I'm concerned!

Laughing

Well then, you and my fiance share the same opinion of Tim McGraw. =)

(It's OK though, because I feel the same way about his wife!)

EDIT: DANG IT! I have GOT to stop hijacking threads. Brick wall

Oooh, fun:

1. Cell Block Tango- Chicago Movie Soundtrack
What a fun song. From a fun movie. I haven't listened to this soundtrack in forever, but its nice to be reminded of its total coolness.

2. Give it Away- Red Hot Chili Peppers
Not one of my favorite RHCP songs. But I love RHCP. So, I'll give them permission to write a bad song or two.

3. One Less Bell to Answer- Fifth Dimension
I like this song. However, I only listen to it in the context of the Running With Scissors Soundtrack.

4. Kitty- Presidents of the United States of America
What a fun band. What a wierd song. I really am in love with the album this is off of. (its self titled)

5. As Lovers Go- Dashboard Confessional
Song of the Summer, 2005. I just really was obsessed with this song that summer. I made a few other people from the camp I go to love it also.

6. I Should Tell You- Rent Soundtrack (the Broadway one, not the movie one)
OMG!! OMG!! SO EXCITED!! SEEING RENT FOR THE THIRD TIME ONE WEEK FROM FRIDAY!! OMG!!

7. Pride (In the Name of Love)- U2
One of the best songs by one of the best bands of all time. What more is there to say. Well, lets ask Michael Scott:
Michael Scott wrote:
This is the best break up song I've ever heard. But, every time I bring it up in the office, people start talking about Martin Luther King. What's up with that?
(From the Office iTunes employee playlists.)

8. Snow (Hey Oh)- Red Hot Chili Peppers
This song is one of the best live performances I've ever attended. I really love this song. Not the best song on Stadium Arcadium, but still great.

9. As Ugly as I Seem- The White Stripes
The White Stripes are one of the best active bands with their original lineup still intact. They are just incredible. My first rock band, my first concert. Never get sick of them.

10. Love My Way- The Psychedelic Furs
This song introduced me to the Furs. Who I really, really like. Check out the cover by The Polyphonic Spree.

Well, I had to do this sooner or later. Here's some random ones from my iPod. Remember, these are random from hundreds of songs, so no laughing!

Clint Black - A Bad Goodbye
I really like Clint Black's voice. He's one of my favorite country singers, and this is a nice, powerful duet. My fiance and I's song is "When I Said I Do" by Clint Black, which happens to be a great wedding song, so that will be our first song to dance to. On a side note, we sang "When I Said I Do" in a talent-show-esque thingy in high school.

Mark Schultz - Time of My Life
Mark Schultz is a Christian singer with an amazing voice. The last verse of this song is a tear jerker. He seems to be great at those.

Quote:
Forty years went by and she lived most of God's plan
She stood alone in an attic, wedding dress in her hand
And she held an old letter written so long ago
But she'd never forget it
No matter how old

And as she turned to put the dress away
And pack up the years
He was standing in the doorway
With his eyes full of tears
And he held her

Queen - We Are the Champions

I love Queen. My favorite Queen song is probably "I Want to Break Free"

Children of Eden - Ring of Stones

This is from a Musical that I was in in High School. We put in so many hours of practice, put on so many performances, it was a lot of hard work, but it is one of the best things I've ever done. I would do it again in a heart-beat. I played Abel, brother or Cain. (I made people cry when I died, gosh darn it!)

Dashboard Confessional - The Secret's in the Telling

Yes, I'm a DC fan. I'm a fan of anyone with an impressive voice (you can tell from my list). I have way too many of their songs on my iPod. I don't know who writes these songs, but dang they're good.

Quote:
Our act of defiance
We keep this secret in our blood
No paper or letters
We pass just close enough to touch
We love in secret names
We hide within our veins
The things that keep us bound to one another

Journey - Lights (When the Lights Go Down in the City)
<3 Journey. Don't Stop Believing is probably my favorite.

Maroon 5 - Harder to Breathe
I know many people think it's lame, but I like Maroon 5. His songs just have a very groovy feel to them, and I love his acoutic versions of the songs.

Dashboard Confessional - This Bitter Pill
Another DC song. I told you I had too many on there. More awesome lyrics.

Quote:
And this bitter pill is leaving you
with such an angry mouth.
One that's void of all discretion
such an awful tearing sound.
With it's measure only equal by the power of my stare
glaring over you and over you this feeling of despair
is never wearing out.

Imogen Heap - Hide and Seek
I could listen to this song over, and over, and over, and over. And for a while, I did. Such a serene song.

Mark Schultz - Broken and Beautiful
Another Mark Schultz song. This is one of his newer ones. It has a pretty powerful message. Love, love, love it.

Quote:
Well he'd never been to church before
But he came today as a last resort
His world was crashing in
And he was suffocating in his sin
But tears rolled down, as hope rushed in
He closed his eyes, raised his hands
Worshiping the God who can, bring him back to life again
And it's beautiful

Jon Bon Jovi - Bed of Roses (Acoustic)

A great acoutic version of a great song. I love everything that they sing (well, except the new stuff that's just crap) Sad

The Hollies - He Ain't Heavy (He's My Brother)
For the longest time, I thought it was the Righteous Brothers that sang this song, but when I was putting it on my iPod, looking for the Album and it's cover art, I found that it was the Hollies. Still a great classic song.

Norah Jones - The Long Way Home
Her voice is like a soothing tranquilizer dart. I love it. When I first heard her, before I saw her, I thought she was an older black woman. Just some random FYI.

Garth Brooks - Ain't Goin' Down ('Till the Sun Comes Up)
I grew up with Garth Brooks (Hey, South Louisiana here, c'mon). It's a very fun song, especially if you know all the words.

Creedence Clearwater Revival - Fortunate Son
I. LOVE. CCR. They're music just seems so cool. I feel like I'm living in the 60's and 70's when I listen to them. I have a coonass (that's not a derogatory term, even if Nick Saban got blasted for saying it) side of the family, and they would all get together with guitars and play Creedence songs when I was growing up.

Shane & Shane - Psalm 13
Another Christian one. This duo is a couple of guys who have a great harmony. I'm a fan of good voices, and I love good harmony.

Quote:
For lyrics, see Pslam 13 Laughing

Ben Folds - Fred Jones (Part 2)
Even more than the Imogen Heap song, for a while I listened to this song over and over again. It has the coolest subtle harmony ever. In fact, I'll stop here because I want to listen to this song again.
