13 MAY 2010: Michael is surprisingly cheerful after learning some bad news about Donna. The new parents, Pam and Jim, have trouble staying awake in the office. Meanwhile, Angela takes matters into her own hands when Dwight refuses to honor their contract.

Yes, I know the drill... like Crentist the dentist. Surprised

I didn't think "The Chump" was as consistently funny as the last couple episodes. But it had some laughs, and a classic scene of cringe-worthiness at the ballpark. You know what? I think I'll wait for tomorrow's exciting LITO recap to see if I really liked it. Eh?

Kevin, you're up. Can't wait for all the baseball references that you can throw into this one. I have to agree with Bob that this episode wasn't as laugh out loud funny as the past two, but I did enjoy the conclusion of the baby contract, Jim and Pam's sleeping at work (for valid reasons) and I liked the beginning where all of Michael's employees try to pre-empt his natural down spiral after a break up. I thought the ideas were really good. I don't know when it was established that ice cream was Michael's comfort food, but it's been referenced now in two episodes. If anyone can remember a Michael TH about ice cream, please enlighten me.

I'm back at work now so I have to work on the recap over the weekend, unfortunately. Yeah, I thought this episode was very uneven. Just when it seemed a dud something funny would happen. But it had a hard time sustaining itself (TWSS). I'll try to elaborate on that in my recap.

HDF, just last week, in the "Cover-Up" episode, Michael was shown eating ice cream as comfort food. d'oh! Oh, never mind, THAT was mayonnaise and black olives!

This makes me think back to the episode where Michael Scott was sitting in the hot tub with David Wallace, and Michael kept his undershirt on. The real reason he didn't take the shirt off is because Steve Carell works out a lot, and has a well-defined, muscled mid-section. Michael Scott, a scatterbrained, undisciplined goofball who binges on mayonnaise and black olives, would NOT have a hot body. So, they felt they HAD to cover up his washboard abs.

Hmm... if Robert DeNiro (in his prime) was cast as Michael Scott, by golly HE would have gained 20 pounds and sit proudly slouched in the hot tub, showcasing his sweaty, sloppy body. Shame on you

The Cover-Up, was the other episode I was referring to, but I'm not sure it was ever mentioned before last week's episode. Any thoughts?

HDF, I went to the website OfficeQuotes, which purports to have "every word ever spoken on The Office." I typed "comfort food" into the search engine, and I found this, from "The Injury:"

Deleted Scene 8

Michael: Mmm, I'm telling you the best cure in the world is comfort food. You know how they say "stuff a cold"? Well I don't care you've got, the flu, Lyme disease, emphysema, you eat an entire dark meat chicken, you can walk on the moon.

I put it in red, because Michael's foot was burned, and besides, I hadn't used the "color gimmick" in, let's see... Think ... over a week.

Anyway, that's all I could find on Michael's comfort food. Maybe somebody else knows something else.

Season 1/ Ep. 4
Michael: These are my party-planning beeyatches. Pulled off an amazing '80s party last year. Off the hook!
Michael: So I was thinking, if you haven't already got a cake, um, maybe going for one of those ice-cream cakes from Baskin-Robbins. Those are very good. Very Delicious.
Angela: Meredith's allergic to dairy, so...
Michael: She's not the only one that's going to be eating it, right? I think everybody likes ice-cream cake. It's not, uh, it's not just about her, so...
Pam: It is... her birthday.
Michael: Mint chocolate chip! That'd be good, how about some, mint chocolate chip?

(Green for Mint Chocolate Chip!)

Season 4/ Ep. 9
Pam: [Michael offers his coat to Pam, who is shivering] Oh, thank you.
Michael: You're welcome.
Jan: [eyes Pam] I'm so, so sorry for the temperature in here. The um, sliding glass door shattered. It's actually a really cute story. Do you wanna tell it babe or should I tell it?
Michael: I don't like that story babe.
Jan: Come on, it's a cute story, Michael ran through the sliding glass doors because he thought he heard the ice cream truck!
Michael: Stop, stop it! I mean, I like ice cream. Okay? Sue me. Oh, no, don't. I shouldn't say that jokingly because she will sue me. She loves to sue, loves lawsuits. You know honey, that door was extremely clean and it looked invisible.
Jan: You are so right, you're so right because before I lived here, the glass was always covered in smudges, and then I moved in and I cleaned it so I guess that makes me the Devil.
Michael: Ha ha, you are! She is! She is the devil! I'm in hell! Aaahhh I'm burning, help me!
Angela: You shouldn't joke about that.
Pam: Is there more wine in the kitchen?
Jan: I will get it, I will get it, what kind of hostess would I be if I didn't get. It's okay, I don't mind. In fact you know what, girl's trip, Angela come on. Girl's trip.

(Red for Jan the Devil)

Season 5/ Ep. 13
Michael: [everyone is lying on the floor in the conference room with the light off, Michael is walking around with a candle in his hand] It is a beautiful, sunny day as we walk through the meadow that is very spiritual and relaxing and there are flowers and it is sunny and beautiful. Now, up ahead, a castle, in a distance.
Jim: Don't open your eyes.
Pam: What? [opens her eyes, Michael is standing over her] Oh...
Michael: And you walk up toward the castle, and inside the castle are 4 men, and each of them, none of them have shoes, and they give you a funny cigarette, and you feel even more relaxed, and then you want ice cream. You want a big bowl of ice cream. What kind do you want? Shout it out.
Meredith: Chunky monkey.
Michael: Too expensive.
Stanley: Chocolate.
Michael: Racism is dead Stanley, you can have any kind of ice cream you want. What do you want? [beeping starts] What is that? People! Please I told you to get rid of the cell phones.
Stanley: It's my bio-feedback machine..
Michael: Oh, ok. What is that, like, a video game?
Stanley: It alerts me when my stress level goes up so I can try to calm down.
Michael: You have stress?
Stanley: Yes...
Michael: During our relaxation exercise?

(Brown for chocolate ice cream!)

I think that's about it for Michael "ice cream" references!
I used officequotes.net for these quotes.

I checked all three episodes to see if they were penned by the same writer, but nope! Three different Office writers for three different episodes. So, love of ice cream is indeed universal!

Great use of color, Donna! Laughing Thank goodness there were no references to VANILLA ice cream. The Office quotes would have looked like this:

Now, we might have faintly been able to see FRENCH vanilla quotes!

In my opinion, one of the "weirder" moments of "The Chump" was the bit about the Eagles-inspired ice cream. Where did THAT come from? Of course, it's the kind of nonsensical challenge that I immediately get hooked on. So here's my idea for a quick deleted scene from "The Chump."

Kevin Malone would be mischievously sitting at his desk, thinking out loud of Eagles-inspired ice cream, instead of crunching numbers. Oscar, sitting at the next desk, would be forced to listen to these ideas, interrupting his train of thought. Kevin would be grinning, knowing full well he was annoying Oscar.

KEVIN: "Peachful Easy Feeling"... "Seven Bridges Rocky Road"... "Hotel Caramel-fornia"...
OSCAR: Kevin... will you please stop that?
KEVIN: "Life In The Fudge Lane"...
OSCAR: "STOP THAT, I said!"

Lol.. that's funny, Bob! I like those! I didn't mention the Eagles ice cream in my recap because for the life of me, I couldn't understand what Pam was saying to Erin....

Eagles ice cream does sound weird if you're out of the Philadelphia area, but I assure you, it does exist and is proudly features in my local supermarket every football season!

Turkey Hill is a local ice cream company. A very good one at that! A friend of mine who lives in Lancaster worked for that company for a while. The taste is similar to Breyers.

Oh, the PHILADELPHIA Eagles-inspired ice cream!?! Shocked The football Eagles! Donna, that actually makes more sense that what the show REALLY DID suggest: Ice cream flavors inspired by the classic rock band "The Eagles." They mentioned "Vanilla Sunrise" or something, and a few others that I can't remember. I thought my suggested flavors were better, like "Hotel Caramel-fornia," although it is all pretty ridonkulous. Wow. That goes to show you just how "out-there" that whole concept really is! Was that CREED'S idea, after partaking in some "Northern Lights Cannibus Indicus?"

This is a really funny development about the "Eagles-inspired ice cream." Talk about unexpected twists and turns... this website continues to endlessly amuse me! Very Happy

As an update, I attempted to find any internet mention of "Seattle Seahawk Ice Cream." There is none, so Donna, you can understand MY amazement at this unique local concept of yours. Too bad. The Seahawk colors are blue and green, and that would make an, uh... eye-catching banana split!

That would be interesting. Think
Maybe mint green ice cream with blue jimmies?

That Eagles ice cream bit in the show kinda flew over my head (get it, eagles=fly... d'oh! ). I remember a vague reference to it, but must have been zoning out. I just assumed they meant the Philadelphia Eagles ice cream. Guess it's a point-of-reference thing? Were they referring to rock band inspired ice creams in the show? If so, I missed it!

Office Tally often features a "Question & Answer" session with the writer of a particular Office episode. I would love to ask "The Chump" writer, Aaron Shure, this question: "WHO came up with the bit about the Eagles-inspired ice cream?" That is SO "off-the-wall" that it IS funny, but it's the kind of idea that seems like it came from a hookah pipe. Think

Yeah, when I first heard it, I just naturally assumed they were talking about the football team. That's what made your comments so funny, Bob. Silly me, I thought you were just being clever... Very Happy

I STILL don't know what Pam said. For the life of me, no matter how many times I watched the scene, I couldn't understand her. That show can be mumble-riffic sometimes. I have to go to Office Quotes and read that scene.

The Eagles ice cream tangent is SO weird, that I have a prediction about it: it will be revealed that at the writers' session, somebody proposed using the FOOTBALL Eagles ice cream. It makes sense, because the Philadelphia Eagles have a huge fan base in Scranton. Another one of the writers who doesn't follow football naturally thought the idea was about the classic rock band. Hilarity then ensued around the writers' table. (Writers' table Arrow Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing ) That's one of my predictions.

My other prediction will be answered this evening. I still think the "Scranton Strangler" will be revealed to be Hide, the mysterious Japanese doctor with the "steady hands." I have a stellar track record of always being wrong with my predictions, so a lot is riding on this. Can I keep my pristine streak alive? Wink

You never know Bob, that could be exactly how it happened!
On another, but somewhat related note, my family and I went to a Phillies game today. And Turkey Hill ice cream was on the jumbo-tron, advertising their Philadelphia Phillies Ice Cream! With the Flyers doing so well, I wonder if a Flyers Ice Cream is just around the corner?? Think
