Hey, what's goin' on? Here I am, wandering through the darkened hallways of the quiet LITO forum, makin' sure everything is OK, and I just happen to find this thread unlocked! Who's in charge here?
Unlocked threads, missing staplers, the copy machine left on... this forum has become mighty informal lately...
Just kidding, Joss! Thanks for starting this episode thread. Let's give a warm welcome to The Office Season Eight: We're all apprehensively hoping that the show is up to the task of reinventing itself after the loss of Michael Scott. Well, we'll soon find out. |

I don't think the copy machine being left on is as much a problem as leaving the coffee machine on. Especially with an empty pot on the warmer. Empty glass pot + warmer = no bueno. I know this from experience with employees who didn't know better. Sigh.
Welcome to season 8, kids. Hope it's a good one. _________________ Michael: Early worm gets the worm!

I liked the season premier. There will be funnier episodes down the road, but I think this was a good introduction to the new dynamic of life without Michael Scott.
As I was closing up the bar a few weeks ago, three pilots came in and nicely asked me if I would let one of them "plank" underneath the beer taps. The other two took several cell phone pictures, and I'm sure it ended up somewhere on the internet. I wish I had thought to ask where it would be posted, as I'm in the background of the pictures. |

Hi lito peeps
I liked this episode too. Andy isn't as bad of office manager. I can't believe pam is pregnant again. What are some of the things you want for the season? Maybe for jim to man up and have some more confidence. More laughs would be nice. I loved the cold open. No Planking
Hope your summer was great. I had to work outside this summer. it's a long story _________________ I don't spell too good, and my grammar is abysmal. What I will do is for every grammar or spelling error you catch I will give you 100 schrute bucks. |

Sorry I'm late! Kinda busy weekend... I liked this episode too, although I was initially puzzled by the planking. I have never heard of it and I'm still stunned as to why anyone would do it... lol... Don't get it. But I liked how they handled the recap of the summer like they have to do. Everybody got a little something to say. Quick thoughts: Andy makes the most sense as manager, comedy wise. Dwight's iron fist rule angle would get old fast and Daryl never really had a chance. Andy had a relationship with two women in the office, has a odd buddy relationship with Daryl, Jim and Pam and an adversarial one with Dwight and Gabe. So there's a lot of story potential there. I would still like to see Pam become manager one day, though. We'll see.
Angela being pregnant is interesting. She got a little one note last season as well. My prediction is that her husband will be found out in a men's room sex scandal and Angela will become a single mom. Maybe this is how she and Dwight will angle back towards one another.
I laughed about Pam crying at that commercial because I recognized the song from it a second before they mentioned what it was. I was like "Is that the commercial with the dog?" and it was so that amused me. Also, Pam was very cute pregnant and overemotional. It's funny watching Jim deal with that. And Jim's list is the kind of stuff that drives fan fiction for years to come... lol... it was very sweet.
The last couple of scenes were very well done and a great way to kick off the season, giving us a good look into the characters and Andy's evolution as a manager. Even California's explanation, though cold was pretty on point. Prove me wrong. He threw down a challenge and he came across less cartoonish and more realistic with that speech.
Overall, it was a good way to get going. I'm interested to see where it all goes. What's the over/under on Michael Scott being mentioned by name this season? I say... 10 times. That may be low. Ten times in 22+ episodes. Hmmmm... ok, I'll make it 12 and vote for under. Unless I'm mistaken he wasn't mentioned at all in this one. _________________ "You gotta get out there and EARN, son!"

Welcome back, Iquit! Thanks for chipping in your two cents on The Office. Now, I wouldn't mind hearing your long story about having to "work outside" in the summer. Were you part of a chain gang road crew in Death Valley, California? Or doing swamp reclamation in a mosquito-invested* Louisiana bayou? Installing torchdown roofs in Phoenix? (I'm just thinking of things I wouldn't want to do in the heat of summer.)
*Uh, I meant "mosquito-infested"...

KG, you're forgetting this priceless talking head with pregnant Pam patting her stomach:
Beatific Pam: Right here; little Michael Scott...
Peeved Jim: Nope. Told you I don't like that joke.
Speaking of the "past-it's-expiration-date" planking trend: Have you seen the latest "List" deleted scene? Ryan is holding a map of the world, explaining how fads like planking finally make their way to Scranton, Pa. Like "owling," it's a hoot.

I vote under, too. I'm guessing that the writers are aware that if they mention Michael Scott too much, it will look desperately pathetic... or pathetically desperate. But if they don't mention him much at all, it will look like they are trying to whitewash him from the history books, like some discredited military leader in the old Soviet Union. It's a delicate balancing act.
KG, I love the way you think of things like this; an over/under for Michael Scott references. It sounds like the kind of "office pool" that Kevin Malone would be in charge of. I can picture Kevin badgering an annoyed Oscar into wagering money, while Angela scowls from her desk. Creed would pipe in with "Gimme some that action," and then want to put money on David Wallace... or Ed Truck. |

Lol.. thanks, Bob. Yeah, that DID seem Kevin Malone like. They don't much go into his gambling anymore. I wish they would. _________________ "You gotta get out there and EARN, son!"

I liked a lot about "The List." The writers have set up a bunch of intriguing plot lines, and Robert California is already showing that he will not be a one-dimensional character. The only thing that fell flat for me was Stanley's new go-to phrase: "... and shove it up your butt." I'm pretty sure that will not be sweeping the nation, or make anyone forget "That's what she said."
Unless... ... could Stanley's new go-to phrase be purposefully so bad... that's it's good? Those Office writers are clever like that. |

I wanted to like it. Really, I did. I was hoping The Office would retain some of its earthy charm from the first three seasons, but its gotten a bit strange. In seasons 1-3, I watched every episode over and over to pick up on the subtleties and hidden gags.
Now, its too much like a standard sitcom. I'll stick with it and see how it develops. _________________ Schedule a cleaning today! |

Hey there Dr. Crentist! Welcome to LITO!
The Office seasons 1-3 was the cats meow for sure, but there have been many other stellar moments in these last 5 seasons.
My favorite part of the show is how invested I am in the characters at this point. For example, in this season 8 opener, there were so many wonderful moments between Jim & Pam that long-time fans could really "ooh" and "ahh" over. If we didn't already love them, I doubt we'd care about their little new-parent bits. _________________ "Sandals Jamaica Mon" |
